A former Florida Gators star safety has landed a new opportunity after signing with the Green Bay Packers.
While the Florida Gators football program has not been what it once was in recent years, they have still continued to churn out NFL talent.
Despite the team having very little success in the SEC recently, the Gators have had a lot of individual talent. After moving on from former head coach Billy Napier last season, they are hoping to begin turning things around in 2026 under new head coach Jon Sumrall.
All of that being said, plenty of players in recent years have gone on to find success playing on Sunday's.
One former Florida star who has flown under the radar since leaving the Gators is defensive back Trey Dean III. He played five total seasons with Florida during his college career. Since heading off to the NFL, he has yet to make a name for himself professionally.
Throughout his five seasons with the Gators, Dean put together big numbers. He racked up 255 total tackles, five sacks, a forced fumble, four interceptions, and 18 defended passes. Most of those numbers came in his final two years at Florida.
So far in his NFL career, Dean has yet to record a legitimate statistic.
Dean ended up going undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft, but was able to latch on with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent. He didn't last long in New York, but landed with the Kansas City Chiefs and ended up winning a Super Bowl on their practice squad.
He also had a brief stint with the Cleveland Browns' practice squad.
After his time with the Browns, Dean went on to play a stretch in the UFL. He spent time with the DC Defenders, Louisville Kings, and St. Louis Battlehawks.
With that being said, Dean has now received another NFL opportunity.
According to a report from NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Dean has agreed to a deal with the Green Bay Packers after working out for the team.
"Sources: The Packers are signing free agent S Trey Dean III after working him out today," Schultz reported on X. "Dean, the former Florida Gator, won a Super Bowl with the Chiefs and most recently starred in the USFL — where he won another championship."
On the outside looking in, Dean has a very long shot to make the Packers' roster. But, being given another opportunity will offer him a chance to win a spot in Green Bay or at the very least audition for other teams around the NFL.
While things haven't gone exactly according to plan for Dean at the professional level, he remains a name worth keeping an eye on. Florida fans will continue rooting for him to find a home in the NFL and perhaps that home will be with the Packers.
