After transferring from Florida, DJ Lagway faces a pivotal season with Baylor, battling health and a new system for a breakout year.
The Florida Gators are set to decide between quarterbacks Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr. when training camp starts this summer.
Philo is thought to be the leading candidate for the QB1 job, but new head coach Jon Sumrall isn't giving any secrets away after spring football.
DJ Lagway transferred away from Florida to Baylor in the offseason. Lagway threw for 2,264 yards, 16 touchdowns and 14 touchdowns in 2025 as the Gators finished the season with a 4-8 record.
Shehan Jeyarajah with CBS Sports is predicting Lagway to have a breakout season with the Bears, thinking the quarterback can pass for nearly 4,000 yards in Waco.
"The Bears essentially had no choice but to invest heavily in the former No. 3 overall recruit Lagway after a miserable 5-7 season and lackluster transfer cycle," Jeyarajah wrote. "While Lagway has major health issues to work through after a tumultuous Florida career, he steps into a quarterback-friendly system in Waco.
"There's a decent chance that Lagway will still struggle with some turnover issues -- and there's no guarantee that production can help get the Bears back to bowl eligibility. But with question marks all over the roster, he's their best shot."
While by all appearances it may look like Lagway took a step down by going to a Big 12 program, the transition could be what he needs to succeed at the college level.
Earlier this spring, Lagway told USA Today that he struggled to find his place at Florida and dealt with depression during his two seasons in Gainesville.
I was in a bubble down there, I didn’t feel like a normal person,” Lagway said. “I didn’t even know what the campus looked like. I was really closed off. I didn’t really hang out with my teammates.
"Yeah, I was depressed. I just stayed in my own lane. Stayed out of the way.”
It's fair to wonder if Lagway could have succeeded with a new coaching staff at Florida, but we'll never know.
The Gators will hope that Jones or Philo will be able to win games in the upcoming season.
