Former Florida Star Predicted to Challenge Browns QB Shedeur Sanders cover image

This former Florida Gators star is being predicted to challenge Shedeur Sanders for the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback job.

When Anthony Richardson departed the Florida Gators for the 2023 NFL Draft, scouts, fans and media members alike were salivating over his potential.

Richardson was selected by the Indianapolis Colts with the fourth overall pick, and his potential was on full display the second he stepped on the gridiron.

The problem was that Richardson wasn't able to do that for very long.

Injuries limited the 23-year-old to just four games during his rookie campaign, and the following season, Richardson was so terrible that he lost his job to Joe Flacco at one point. He completed just 47.7 percent of his passes in 11 starts, and he was then replaced by Daniel Jones to start the 2025 campaign.

Now, Richardson could already be on the trade block, and Max Dible of Heavy.com has proposed an interesting potential landing spot for the Florida product: the Cleveland Browns.

"However, flipping Richardson to a team like the Browns in exchange for [Dillon] Gabriel and the No. 107 overall pick, for instance, would allow Indy to extract maximum value for Richardson before he presumably leaves on his own for nothing a year or two from now," Dible wrote.

The fact that Gabriel and a fourth-round pick is considered "maximum value" for Richardson at this stage just goes to show how far his stock has fallen.

Of course, it's no sure thing the Colts will move Richardson this spring.

Jones tore his Achilles in December and is headed toward free agency, so there is no guarantee Indianapolis re-signs him. And even if the Colts do retain Jones, he is slated to miss a big chunk of 2026.

Indianapolis invested a lot into Richardson, so the Colts may want to give him another chance before completely throwing in the towel.

Should Richardson be dealt to the Browns, he would be competing with Shedeur Sanders for the starting job in 2026.

Richardson spent three years with the Gators between 2020 and 2022, throwing for 2,549 yards, 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 53.8 percent of his passes during his final season in Gainesville. He also rushed for 654 yards and nine scores.

The Miami native had issues with his throwing accuracy ever since college, so perhaps it's no surprise that he has endured the same struggles on the professional level.

Unfortunately, Richardson may be running out of time to prove himself.
