A former wide receiver has sent a warning to the SEC about Jon Sumrall and the Florida Gators.

When Jon Sumrall took over as head coach of the Florida Gators back in late November, the culture in Gainesville was expected to shift.

It looks like that has already taken place.

There is a different feeling around Florida heading into 2026, so much so that some sportsbooks are setting their over-under at 7.5, this even though the Gators went just 4-8 last season and have posted four losing campaigns the last five years.

Former Baylor wide receiver and current On 3 analyst J.D. PicKell is bullish on Florida, as well, and during a recent episode of his podcast, PicKell made it clear that he feels the Gators will be a very tough matchup next fall.

"This team is going to suck to play," PicKell said. "The line of scrimmage, the way that they operate urgency and energy-wise and it matches Jon Sumrall. You have a former linebacker as your head coach which gives me the feel this team will have a linebacker personality to them."

PicKell isn't entirely ready to claim that Florida will exceed its over-under just yet, as he wants to see more at the quarterback position first, but it's abundantly clear that he thinks the Gators could make things tough on their SEC opponents next season.

Florida put together an impressive transfer portal haul, nabbing 29 players in the portal and ultimately placing 12th in On 3's transfer portal rankings. That influx of talent should definitely have the Gators looking improved.

Plus, Sumrall managed to keep key names like running back Jadan Baugh, wide receiver Vernell Brown and edge rusher Jayden Woods, so it seems pretty obvious that the players are buying into his vision.

But can Sumrall turn a languishing program around this quickly?

While the 43-year-old had impressive runs at both Troy and Tulane, going 43-12 across four seasons split between the two teams, coaching in a Power-4 conference is a completely different animal.

Sumrall certainly seems up for the challenge, but we won't really know just how ready he actually is until we see Florida on the field in 2026.

The Gators will open up at home against Florida Atlantic on Sept. 5.
