Let's hope history is on its side.
Florida basketball enters the season with a real opportunity not only to be an elite team in the SEC, but to win a national championship.
I'd go so far as to say anything less than a national championship for Florida will likely be viewed as a disappointment, as unfortunate and unfair as that might sound.
The harsh reality is that Florida is expected to win at a very high level, and with the money it's spent over the past couple of years, especially with the returning players this year, Todd Golden and his squad are expected to win. History is also on Florida's side, interestingly enough.
History doesn't always mean everything, especially in this era of college basketball, but it doesn't hurt to see Florida in a good position to win it all, at least according to prior numbers.
“Why they’re interesting: The last five No. 1 seeds* to return at least four starters the following year are Kansas (for the 2007-08 season), North Carolina (2008-09), Kansas (2016-17), Purdue (2023-24) and Houston (2024-25 season). Those teams, in order, won the national title, won the national title, lost in the Elite Eight, lost in the national title game and lost in the national title game by one bucket; they all were No. 1 seeds again and all won their conferences, going a combined 78-12 in conference play. The Gators are next in line, with four starters returning from a No. 1 seed. The odds are in their favor to win the SEC.
“Baylor would have been a sixth had the 2019-20 NCAA Tournament happened. The Bears won the Big 12 and the national title the following season,” The Athletic wrote.
What's crazy here is that Florida has actually returned four starters from last season.
That's not typical in college basketball, and we probably won't see it for quite some time.
The Gators have shown they can already win at a very high level, almost doing so last year in the NCAA Tournament after winning the season before.
That doesn't necessarily mean Florida is guaranteed to find a lot of success this season, and it still has to play good basketball, but there's plenty of reason to believe it will do exactly that when it matters most.
