Despite consecutive blowout losses, the Gators can salvage their season by stabilizing a shaky secondary and navigating a manageable November slate to secure a respectable eight-win finish.

Josh Pate Thinks Florida Can Still Be 'Fine' This SeasonMore Videos

Is the sky falling for the Florida Gators?

If you're Jon Sumrall's son, and you were expecting the Gators to beat South Carolina at "The Swamp" to stay ranked and in the College Football Playoff conversation, then yes.

At the end of September, Florida looked like a CFP playoff contender. After two straight blowout losses in the SEC, including one at home against a South Carolina team on the ropes, those hopes are pretty much dashed.

During the "Josh Pate's College Football Show" on Sunday, the host argued that Florida can still be "fine" this season. He thinks the Gators have "everything in front of them."

Look, the Gators can make a case for the CFP if they pull off a win over either Texas or Georgia and win out for the rest of the year. Wins over Ole Miss and one of those games would boost their resume. Still, that's a tall order, especially with a secondary that Pate (and Sumrall suggests) deems a liability.

Even if the Gators lost to both Texas and Georgia, an 8-4 season should be viewed as a win for Sumrall in Year 1. Pate's point is that the back four games are somewhat "manageable" for Florida.

The Gators will finish November playing Oklahoma, No. 15 Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and Florida State. Those are all winnable games for Sumrall and crew, provided UF is able to start fixing things known to be issues at this point in the season.

Florida cut down on penalties in their 38-19 loss to South Carolina. However, the offensive line didn't play well. Quarterback Aaron Philo is not consistent. The secondary has to be better if the Gators are to win eight games.

The win against Ole Miss showed Florida has the ability to beat anyone in the country if it plays to its potential. The problem for Sumrall is trying to get that every week out of a roster he didn't handpick.

The toughest games outside of Texas and Georgia will be Oklahoma and Kentucky. The Sooners don't have a great offense, but the Gators will have a tough time moving the ball against OU's defense. If the Sooners take Jadan Baugh out of the game, it could be a long afternoon for Philo.

Kentucky feels like a must-win game for Sumrall, given the Wildcats have a first-year head coach (Will Stein).

Beating those two programs would do wonders for the future of the Gators.
