For the fifth time in 15 years, Florida is looking for a new coach to return the football program to national relevance. Multiple reports say the Gators' preferred choice is Tulane coach Jon Sumrall.

Breaking news

While the college football world waits on Lane Kiffin to make up his mind, seven coaching jobs at Power 4 schools, including Florida and three other Southeastern Conference rivals, still need to be sorted.

The Gators, who fell out of — or removed themselves from — the consideration set for Kiffin this past week, reportedly have switched their laser focus to Tulane's Jon Sumrall.

ESPN's Pete Thamel said that Sumrall, 43, is expected to make a decision Sunday morning.

Hard times at Florida

Sumrall's challenge in Gainesville would be restoring Florida football to national relevance.

The Gators were a regular presence in the championship conversation during the tenures of Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer, who together won eight SEC and three national titles. That was 15 years ago.

Four coaches have come and gone since those glory days. Most recently, Billy Napier was fired Oct. 19 after three-plus seasons and he left with the distinction of being the first Florida coach with a losing career record in almost 80 years.

Sumrall's teams — granted, in lesser conferences — have appeared in season-ending championship games each of the past three seasons. Assuming the 22nd-ranked Green Wave beat Charlotte on Saturday night, Tulane will play in the American Conference title game next week and possibly could make the College Football Playoff.

“He’s an absolute stud,” said Jacksonville Jaguars coach Liam Coen, who coached alongside Sumrall at Kentucky. “I’ve got a ton of respect for Jon Sumrall as a man, as a person, as a coach. He can connect with all walks of life. Recruits, there’s not many better recruiters I’ve been around at all positions, not just on defense, but the entirety of it. And I know his teams play their tails off."

Florida fans may see him as a consolation prize after Kiffin and as another reach like Napier, who was nicknamed “Sun Belt Billy” because he struggle in the powerhouse SEC.

Lots of jobs and candidates

There are seven coaching jobs open at Power 4 conference schools and four in the SEC alone: LSU/Ole Miss, Florida, Auburn, Arkansas, Penn State, UCLA, and California.

South Florida's Alex Golesh reportedly has an offer from Arkansas, plus interest from Auburn and Ole Miss (if Kiffin leaves).

Golesh and Sumrall are two names among a half-dozen or more coaches that have been mentioned frequently as jobs have come open.
