In an already stacked wide receiver room for the Florida Gators, this incoming transfer has already been making waves in Gainesville.
Coming into Jon Sumrall’s first season as the head coach of the Florida Gators, there’s a lot that we still don’t know what to expect.
However, the one position group that’s expected to thrive is the wide receivers.
The Gators will roll out Dallas Wilson, Vernell Brown III, and Eric Singleton this season in what’s supposed to be one of the best WR cores in college football.
But there’s one receiver that’s hiding in the shadows that fans should keep a keen eye on.
Transfer Micah Mays from Wake Forest.
Mays, a four-star recruit, had grown up a Florida fan and had long yearned to be a Gator.
However, because the Gators initially didn’t recruit him as much as he was hoping for, he headed to Wake Forest.
While in Winston-Salem, Mays had a difficult time climbing up the depth chart. He redshirted his first season after not registering a reception, and the following two seasons, he totaled 520 yards, 15.3 yards per catch and four touchdowns.
But after he entered the transfer portal in January, he became a hot commodity in the transfer portal.
Ultimately though, living out the childhood dream is difficult to match.
Gators’ receiver coach, Marcus Davis had grown to really like him, and the admiration came on display during Florida’s spring game when Mays totaled four catches for 122 yards and two touchdowns.
Additionally, On3’s Pete Nakos singled out Mays as one of college football’s potential breakout transfers.
“Florida could have one of the top receiver rooms in the nation with Dallas Wilson, Vernell Brown III and Eric Singleton,” Nakos wrote. “But the receiver On3 continues to hear the most buzz about this summer and into preseason has been Wake Forest transfer Micah Mays. Mays totaled 34 catches for 520 yards over two seasons with the Demon Deacons, and sources have said he can line up at any receiver spot. As one source put it to On3, he’s ‘an absolute stud.’”
It may be hard for Mays to garner a substantial amount of looks because of where he is on the depth chart, but this has the chance to be a quality stepping stone for the following year.
After this season, Singleton will be moving on, which opens up the door for Mays to line up on the outside. Not only that, Florida will also have a better idea at who’s its quarterback.
This season was always projected to be a transitional season, with next season being the first step to potentially contend again.
Which is why Mays’ development this season is so critical.
