Three Florida Gators football players earned SEC Player of the Week honors following UF's upset of Texas on Saturday. The 29-21 win knocked then-No. 9 Texas out of the AP Top 25 entirely. While the victory wasn't enough to earn Billy Napier's program a top 25 ranking, the conference accolades speak to how impressive the win was for UF.
Quarterback DJ Lagway's bounce-back performance earned him SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors. There were plenty of great offensive performances throughout the conference, but Lagway doing what he did against what had been one of the best defenses in the nation was quite impressive.
Wide receiver Taylor Spierto earned co-Special Teams Player of the Week honors. Notably, he didn't earn it through a great punt or kick return, as you might expect of a receiver being bestowed the award. Instead, it was his punt block for a safety that earned him the title.
Finally, wide receiver Dallas Wilson was named the sole Freshman Player of the Week. It was one of many superlatives for the highly touted freshman. Not only was his performance impressive, but it came in his first-ever appearance for the Gators, against a stiff Longhorns defense, no less.
Here's what the SEC had to say about the three UF honorees:
Offensive Player of the Week:
DJ Lagway, QB, Florida
Co-Special Teams Player of the Week
Taylor Spierto, WR, Florida
Freshman Player of the Week
Dallas Wilson, WR, Florida
