
Florida State basketball shared the floor against a California Golden Bears team featuring deep NBA representation.
Three-time NBA Finals champ Mark Madsen and son of Chicago Bulls legend Justin Pippen, however, join the Bears in taking the stunning loss to the Seminoles.
FSU jumped to a 15-point lead before holding off a late Cal rally -- stunning the rising Atlantic Coast Conference power Bears 63-61 in Tallahassee.
Cal managed to snatch the lead late at 59-58 with under 3:50 left. Chauncey Wiggins, however, broke the 60-60 tie for good with a six-foot turnaround jumper.
Milos Ilic then missed one of two free throws, making his second attempt to cut the lead at 62-61. FSU later missed two shots with approximately 1:50 left.
Except Dai Dai Ames missed the next two basket attempts for Cal including a driving layup. John Camden later misfired on a 26-foot three-point jumper. Lajae Jones made the final basket of the night from the white stripe.
Pippen received one more chance for Cal to win the game. But he missed the 25-foot three-pointer attempt for the final shot of the night...leading to the FSU upset.
Florida State entered its home arena winning just one ACC game -- a narrow upset over Miami. But the 'Noles took a recent tough loss at the hands of SMU and came into Tucker Center with a dismal 1-5 record in conference play.
Florida State managed to outrebound Cal 42-41 with Jones leading the way at eight. Thomas Bassong pulled down six boards. Jones was a force on the blocking side too -- leading the way at two swats including one that saw him sprinting to deny the fast break layup.
Wiggins led the scoring charge with 18 points -- now his second-best scoring output this season. He banked a trio of shots from behind the arc and went 7-of-9 from field goal range. Wiggins earned 31 total minutes for the second time in the last three games.
Robert McCray V added 11 points in starting duty. He made 5-of-10 field goals but none of this three long range attempts went through the hoop. Jones ended scoring nine points. A.J Swinton led the bench scoring with six points.
