Florida State fell apart against Wake Forest on Sunday and in the process, lost a chance to finally win its first Atlantic Coast Conference game.
Now they get a school reeling from an emotional loss -- albeit on the football field.
What type of mindset the Miami basketball team will have amid that emotional gridiron loss remains to be seen. But FSU can aim to add another big loss for the Coral Gables campus by attempting the upset in front of ESPN U cameras at 7 p.m. ET.
But again, FSU has taken consecutive narrow losses -- including losing a late lead to Syracuse.
Here now is Fernie Ruano with the betting preview.
Let’s face it.
It’s been a rough start for Florida State first-year men’s basketball head coach Luke Loucks, who has already endured five straight ACC losses — without a win — and comes into Coral Gables, Florida for a 7:00 p.m. (ET) tipoff at the Wastco Center having dropped 10 of his last 12 games manning the bench for the Seminoles.
Florida State (7-11, 0-5) has already been blown out by Texas A&M, Georgia, Houston, Dayton, North Carolina and worst of all, by North Carolina State, which hammered FSU on their home floor by 44 points.
Throw in the Seminoles most recent performance, a heartbreaking 69-68 defeat to Wake Forest on Saturday night in which Florida State led comfortably late in the second half, and it’s a surprise Loucks, at 35 the youngest head coach in ACC and who replaced longtime FSU head coach Leonard Hamilton last March, hasn’t walked out in the middle of a practice session.
Never to return.
However, a victory— or a strong performance against the rival Hurricanes (15-3, 4-1) — for the road underdog Seminole's (+11.5), winless on the road this season, especially against Miami, could help a team that plays two of their next four games away from home () turn the tide somewhat.
Florida State, off to its worst start in conference play since the 2000-2001 season, is +604 on the moneyline.
The over/under is 165.5 points for the ESPNU national TV broadcast.
The Hurricanes (-11.5, -924 on the moneyline), who just had a 10-game winning streak snapped by Clemson on Saturday afternoon, is 11-0 at home this season.
Miami will be honoring former head coach Jim Larranaga at halftime of Wednesday night’s game.
Miami point guard Tre Donaldson, averaging 16.3 points per game, the ACC Player of the Week last week was just 2-of-10 from the floor vs. Clemson and finished with five points.
Robert McCray V leads the Seminoles in scoring with 13.6 points per game.
Florida State forward Thomas Bassong (undisclosed injury) is expected to play, as is Cam Miles. Guards Jalen Crawford, Maximo Garcia-Plata and Xavier Osceola (hip) are listed as questionable.
Seminoles vs. Hurricanes betting analysis:
Larranaga sitting courtside and being honored at halftime of Tuesday night’s game adds a variable that all college basketball bettors should be aware of before locking in your betting action today.
The Seminoles, getting ever so much closer to notching a win in conference play, are usually undermanned, with a roster that is awful at rebounding, playing defense and shooting beyond the arc. Their inconsistent offense gives pause.
Interestingly though, the Hurricanes, coming off a 69-59 road loss to the Clemson Tigers, held a watch party at the Wastco Center on Monday night for the Indiana-Miami national championship game.
So, I’m curious as to if that will have any affect on the action on this basketball court on Wednesday.
And remember: FSU-Miami is always a rivalry game — no matter the sport.
Even on a sleepy Tuesday night in Coral Gables.
Be careful, kids.
