The No. 21-ranked Florida State baseball team rebounded from a 10-1 blowout loss to Nebraska on Sunday, with a win Wednesday night against North Florida 14-9.
Up next for the Noles, The Citadel will present an opportunity for the Seminoles to stay hot as they get ready for conference play in a few weeks against Wake Forest on March 13.
Florida State is 5-2, after starting 4-0. The Citadel is 4-2 heading into this three-game home series for the Garnet and Gold starting Friday.
Tallahassee native Myles Bailey is coming off of a two-homer performance that included three hits and four RBI against North Florida. The power hitter was second in the ACC last year with 19 home runs, and he’s off to a fast start this year. The sophomore first baseman, who looks more like an NFL tight end at 6-foot-4 and 257 pounds, is tied with 10 others for the national lead in home runs with four. Bailey also has 10 hits and 10 runs this year, which are both tied for the team lead.
Wes Mendes is the ace pitcher for FSU. The 6-foot-1 lefty out of Tampa is currently 2-0 with an 0.00 ERA. In 10.1 innings, Mendes has only given up five hits with 14 strikeouts this season. Mendes will take the mound for the Seminoles in the opening game of the series Friday at noon (ET).
Trey Beard was the top-ranked pitcher in the transfer portal last year. The lefty with the 94-mile-per-hour fastball is currently ranked as the 64th prospect in this year's upcoming draft, according to MLB.com. Beard, who is off to a slow start, has pitched 2.1 innings with an 11.57 ERA so far this year. The 6-foot-2 transfer from Florida Atlantic is expected to start for Florida State on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m. (ET).
At 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, right-handed pitcher Bryson Moore reminds you more of Jason Taylor, former Miami Dolphins defensive end and Pro Football Hall of Famer, than he does a college pitcher. Moore is off to a tough start with a 7.50 ERA, having given up nine hits in six innings. He’ll take the mound on Sunday for the 1 p.m. game for the Noles.
As a team the Noles are batting .294 with seven homers. Sophomore infielder Noah Sheffield (with 10 hits and nine runs), and junior outfielder Brayden Dowd (nine hits, 10 runs) have come up big for the Noles with their hitting and scoring.
The unranked Bulldogs are coming off of back-to-back wins against Marshall. The team will go into the weekend with Will Holmes (1-1, 5.59 ERA), Bryce Coulter (0-0, 6.75 ERA), and Michael Gipson (1-0-6.14 ERA) starting on consecutive days. Offensively, the Bulldogs are hitting .294, with four homers. Standout players this season include catcher Phillips Daniels batting .409 with nine hits, first baseman Zach Hunt, who’s batting .304 with seven hits, eight RBI and two homers, and Jayden Williams, who’s batting .318 with seven hits and nine runs.
Last year the Noles ended their season with a loss to Oregon State in the Super Regional. If manager Link Jarrett plans to build the momentum needed to advance to the College World Series, this three-game stretch will be a great opportunity to keep things hot against the unranked Bulldogs.
