Florida State has fired Mike Norvell midway through his seventh season following another disappointing loss, ending a tenure once filled with promise.
Mike Norvell’s tenure at Florida State has come to an end midway through his seventh season, as university leadership has decided to move in a different direction following another disappointing campaign.
On3’s Pete Nakos and Chris Low reported Sunday that Florida State officials were meeting to discuss Norvell’s future less than 24 hours after the Seminoles suffered a 36-24 defeat against Clemson at Doak Campbell Stadium.
University leadership ultimately determined that Norvell could no longer lead the program forward.
The loss dropped Florida State to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, putting the Seminoles in danger of missing postseason eligibility for the third consecutive season.
Norvell was unable to reverse the program’s decline following Florida State’s undefeated 2023 regular season and ACC championship.
Since that championship campaign, the Seminoles have struggled to regain their footing, compiling a 4-17 record in conference play over the past three seasons.
Florida State finished 2-10 in 2024 before improving to 5-7 in 2025. Expectations for a significant turnaround in 2026 have largely gone unmet.
Norvell finishes his Florida State tenure with a 41-39 overall record.
The program’s struggles have fueled mounting frustration among a fan base accustomed to competing for conference and national championships.
The decision also comes during a period of significant administrative uncertainty in Tallahassee.
Senior associate athletic director Bruce Warwick has served as interim athletic director while the university evaluates its long-term leadership structure.
Florida State President Richard McCullough recently acknowledged the frustration surrounding the football program in a letter to Seminoles supporters, emphasizing that the university shares their expectations for championship-level success.
However, parting ways with Norvell presents considerable financial challenges.
According to USA TODAY Sports, Norvell’s contract carried a buyout of approximately $46.7 million if he were dismissed on December 1, making his departure one of the most expensive coaching changes in college football history.
The financial implications become even more complicated with Florida State simultaneously searching for a permanent athletic director.
Norvell arrived in Tallahassee in December 2019 following a successful tenure at Memphis, where he established himself as one of college football’s rising coaching talents.
After navigating difficult rebuilding seasons, Norvell guided the Seminoles to their first ACC championship since 2014.
His 2023 team finished the regular season undefeated but was controversially excluded from the College Football Playoff following quarterback Jordan Travis’ season-ending injury.
At the time, Florida State appeared positioned to reestablish itself among college football’s elite programs.
Instead, the Seminoles experienced a stunning reversal, with three consecutive disappointing campaigns ultimately erasing the momentum Norvell had built.
Florida State travels to Boston College on November 7 before concluding its regular season against Pittsburgh, NC State and Florida.
The university must now determine who will lead the Seminoles through the remainder of the season while beginning the search for a permanent replacement.
For Florida State, Sunday’s decision marks the end of a tenure that once promised to restore the program to national prominence but ultimately collapsed under the weight of expectations.
Norvell helped bring Florida State back to the top of the ACC. His inability to sustain that success ultimately cost him his job.
