Boasting a dominant home record and a roster featuring the ACC Pitcher of the Year, the historic Seminoles prepare to welcome three challengers to Dick Howser Stadium.
The Florida State Seminoles got bounced from the ACC tournament by Pitt in their only appearance, but won 19 games in ACC play during the regular season, and won eight conference series.
Both were the team’s best since 2014.
This season, the Seminoles swept No. 12 Wake Forest and won conference series over No. 10 NC State and also against then No. 10 Virginia.
In the eyes of the NCAA D1 baseball selection committee, that was good enough for the Seminoles to be named a top 16 seed and will host the Tallahassee regional.
No. 10 Florida State (38-17, 19-11 in ACC) will host St. Johns, Coastal Carolina and Northern Illinois at Dick Howser Stadium, a venue where the Seminoles have won 27 of 31 games this season. Beginning on Friday, Florida State will battle St. Johns.
Florida State is second all-time in winning percentage at .717, and also in post-season wins.
Seminoles as a Regional Host
This will be Florida State’s 62nd appearance in the NCAA baseball tournament. Of those appearances, 38 have been as a regional host, which is the most of any program in the nation. The Seminoles have advanced to the super regionals 19 times, which is also tops in the country.
Playoff History
The Seminoles have made the post-season in 44 consecutive seasons and hosted more super regionals than any team in college baseball. Florida State started their baseball program in 1948, and until the end of the 2022 season, the Seminoles posted 75 consecutive winning seasons, the most in college baseball history.
Seminoles to Watch
Going into the regional, Florida State had five talented players who were named to All-ACC teams, including Wes Mendes as the ACC Pitcher of the Year. The ace of the Seminoles staff, Mendes posted a 9-3 record, an ERA of 2.93, and 117 strikeouts. He allows opponents a batting average of just 2.09 against him.
At the plate, the Seminoles are led by All-ACC third-team selection Brayden Dowd and All-ACC Freshman John Stuetzer. Dowd is batting .294 with 10 home runs and 34 RBI. In addition, Dowd is 10-for-10 in stolen bases. Stuetzer’s batting average is .274 with nine home runs, and he leads the team with 41 RBI.
But the X factor for the Seminoles might be the availability of relief pitcher John Abraham. He did not play in the series against the Miami Hurricanes, and as of this writing, his status is unknown.
