Blue-chip defensive lineman Jernard Albright flipped his pledge from South Carolina to Tallahassee, catapulting Mike Norvell’s 2027 class into the top 50 behind a defense-heavy recruiting surge.
The Florida State Seminoles are on a recruiting roll. The past few weeks have turned out exactly like they were needed to be, bringing fresh commitments to Tallahassee.
Sunday brought another one, just in flip fashion. Four-star DL Jernard Albright announced on Sunday that he is flipping his commitment from South Carolina to FSU. Originally supposed to visit Tallahassee next weekend, Albright moved up is official visit to this Friday, and announced his decision shortly after.
“FSU was mostly definitely ten steps ahead of South Carolina,” he said.
Albright’s commitment wasn’t the only major positive news that the Seminoles received this weekend. Right after the commitment, FSU’s Class of 2027 rankings saw a massive surge of 8 points. The Seminoles, who were largely struggling to make it inside the Top 50 after ranking at No. 55 last week, now sit at No. 47 per 247 Sports Composite.
The Georgia product mentioned FSU’s Brotherhood being the main reasons prompting his flip.
“Most definitely the brotherhood. I think people don’t really understand how much of a big factor that is, being able to have a bond with people that you play with — not only on the field, but have that bond off the field — is just an amazing factor.”
According to Rivals, he is the 97th-best player in the country, as well as the No. 4 player in Georgia.
Why Jernard Albright's Flip Helps Norvell
FSU recently lost four-star safety Mekhi Williams to the transfer portal, who later committed to Wisconsin. Mekhi was a crucial part of Norvell’s Class of 2027 as the No. 14 safety in the nation. Williams was also the highest-rated prospect Florida State had.
Now, it’s Albright.
Williams was considered the answer to a severely struggling Noles defense in 2025.
Ever since committing to FSU back in May 2025, Norvell essentially built his recruiting blueprint around him, and it all came crashing down with his flip.
Luckily, they already have in-state recruit Jemari Foreman at safety, who committed in June 2025. That might also be the reason why Norvell insists on Albright playing at linebacker when Beamer had him as a safety.
On top of it all, Albright’s commitment gives the defensive line some much-needed talent. Norvell has been building his Class of 2027 mainly on the defensive side of the ball. Six of his eight commits this season play on defense.
Their six highest-rated commits are also defensive players, including all three of their four-star commitments.
