Trey Beard’s dominance and a late offensive explosion propelled the Seminoles to a dominant victory, clinching a top ACC seed while pushing for a national top-eight ranking.

No. 11 Florida State secured the season-closing series against the Miami Hurricanes with an 11-1 run-rule victory Friday night in Tallahassee.

The Seminoles kept the momentum going after their walk-off win in 11 innings on Thursday by limiting Miami to just a single run. The Hurricanes also hurt themselves on defense with three errors.

With the series win, Florida State solidified their position as a top four seed in the ACC tournament and firmly inserted themselves into the conversation for a top eight national seed in the NCAA tournament.

Catcher Hunter Carns went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and an RBI for the Seminoles. FSU pitcher Trey Beard posted eight strikeouts, with only one walk and one earned run on 99 pitches and six innings of work. He was replaced by reliever Brodie Purcell, who came in to strikeout the side in the top of the seventh inning.

Florida State (38-15, 19-10 in ACC) scored runs in the second, third, and fourth innings, and exploded for five runs in the eighth while holding Miami (35-17, 15-14 in ACC) scoreless after the first inning, when Max Galvin launched a solo home run to put Miami ahead 1-0 early.

The one blemish on an otherwise outstanding performance is that Florida State batted just .188 (3-for-16) with runners in scoring position, and they left 14 runners stranded. The Seminoles will have to improve on that aspect of their game if they want to make a run to Omaha and the College World Series.

Purcell proved to be a good choice from the bullpen, who posted five strikeouts, no runs, one hit and one walk.

The Miami pitching, however, was terrible. The Hurricanes used six of their hurlers and none of them had control of their pitches or could find the strike zone, as they threw more pitches for walks (13) than for strikeouts (7).

Florida State added two more runs in the eighth inning courtesy of a single and two RBI by third baseman Cal Fisher that scored both Eli Putnam and Carter McCulley. Then, Brody DeLamielleure roped a two-RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.

FSU shortstop Gabe Fraser singled into right field to score their 11th run of the game and run-rule the Hurricanes and clinch the series win. Fraser and Fisher combined to drive in five runs for the Seminoles.

With the victory, Florida State has now won five of the last six series against Miami.

Beard got the win for the Seminoles to improve his record to 6-1 on the season. Beard and Purcell combined for 13 strikeouts and, more importantly, saved the bullpen arms to fight another day.

Florida State goes for the sweep on Saturday at Dick Howser Stadium, where the Seminoles boast a 27-3 record.
