The Seminole softball team has won 15 straight games as All American Isa Torres puts herself in rare company with a NCAA record 14 consecutive hits in her last 14 at-bats.
Florida State softball extended its win streak to 15 games as the Seminoles (26-4, 4-0 ACC) took down Cal 12-2 on Friday, in the first game of its three-game series.
Behind a record performance by junior All-American shortstop Isa Torres, the Noles secured another run-rule victory for the No. 10 Seminoles taking down the Golden Bears (10-20, 1-6) in just five innings.
After going 3-for-3 at the plate Friday night, Torres became the first player in NCAA history to have 14 consecutive hits in as many at-bats. The Noles' star shortstop was named ACC Player of the Week in the past two weeks, and also won D1 Softball and Sports Illustrated National Player of the Week honors. Torres was a home run away from hitting for the cycle Friday night, with a single, a double, and a triple against the Bears.
After both teams failed to score runs in the first inning the Noles the second inning scoring kicked off after Haley Griggs hit a triple scoring Marin Heller who was on second base following her double earlier that inning. Torres then hit a triple, scoring Griggs and putting the Noles up 2-0.
In the third inning, Shelby McKenzie hit a three-run home run, scoring Kennedy Harp and Ashtyn Danley.
With only two hits in the game the Bears got on the board in the top of the fourth when redshirt sophomore Kyndal Todd hit her team-leading sixth home run bringing in Carly Raven from first base cutting the Nole lead to 5-2.
The bottom of the fourth inning saw a seven run offensive explosion by the garnet and gold. Isa Torres hit a triple, scoring Griggs from first base. Torres would then score on a Jaysoni Beachum groundout. With Harp on first and Bella Regguiro on second, Ashtyn Danley would hit a three run homer. Makena Sturgis would then get on first base just so Mckenzie could hit another Noles home run putting FSU up 12-2.
After failing to score in the fifth inning the game would be called due to the run rule kicking in. The game would end 12-2 with the Noles continuing their dominance as they have for the last 15 games.
The two-time ACC Pitcher of the Week Jazzy Francik pitched a complete game and is now 11-1 on the season.
Game 2 of this home series kicks off March 22 at 1 p.m. ET.
