Florida State is reportedly evaluating Mike Norvell’s future following another disappointing loss to Clemson amid mounting pressure for change.
Mike Norvell’s future at Florida State has reached a critical point following another disappointing loss, with university leadership reportedly meeting Sunday to determine whether the seventh-year head coach will remain in charge of the Seminoles.
According to On3’s Pete Nakos and Chris Low, Florida State officials are discussing Norvell’s future less than 24 hours after the Seminoles suffered a 36-24 defeat against Clemson at Doak Campbell Stadium.
The loss dropped Florida State to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, putting the program in danger of missing postseason eligibility for the third consecutive season.
For Norvell, the latest defeat adds to a troubling decline that began following Florida State’s undefeated 2023 regular season and ACC championship.
Since that championship campaign, the Seminoles have struggled to regain their footing, compiling a 4-17 record in conference play over the past three seasons.
Florida State finished 2-10 in 2024 before improving to 5-7 in 2025. Expectations for a significant turnaround in 2026 have largely gone unmet.
Norvell’s overall record at Florida State stands at 41-39.
The program’s struggles have created mounting frustration among a fan base accustomed to competing for conference and national championships.
That frustration became impossible to ignore Saturday when an airplane carrying a banner calling for Norvell’s dismissal flew over Doak Campbell Stadium before the Clemson game.
The banner, which also targeted Florida State Board of Trustees Chairman Peter Collins, drew criticism from Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney following the Tigers’ victory.
Swinney defended Norvell and condemned the public demonstration, describing it as disrespectful to the coach, his family and Florida State’s players.
The situation represents another significant decision for Florida State President Richard McCullough, who dismissed athletic director Michael Alford in September amid growing concerns surrounding the direction of the athletics department.
Senior associate athletic director Bruce Warwick has served as interim athletic director while the university evaluates its long-term leadership structure.
McCullough recently acknowledged the frustration surrounding the football program in a letter to Florida State supporters, emphasizing that the university shares their expectations for championship-level success.
However, moving on from Norvell would present considerable financial challenges.
According to USA TODAY Sports, Norvell’s contract carries a buyout of approximately $46.7 million if he is dismissed on December 1, making a potential coaching change one of the most expensive in college football history.
The financial implications become even more complicated with Florida State simultaneously searching for a permanent athletic director.
Norvell arrived in Tallahassee in December 2019 after a successful tenure at Memphis and eventually guided the Seminoles to their first ACC championship since 2014.
His 2023 team finished the regular season undefeated but was controversially excluded from the College Football Playoff following quarterback Jordan Travis’ season-ending injury.
What appeared to be the foundation for sustained success has instead deteriorated into three consecutive disappointing campaigns.
Florida State travels to Boston College on November 7 before concluding its regular season against Pittsburgh, NC State and Florida.
Whether Norvell will be on the sideline for those remaining games is now the central question surrounding the program.
For Florida State, Sunday’s leadership discussions could determine the direction of Seminoles football for years to come.
