No. 10 Noles defeat the Irish 7-2 to take the first game in this three-game series. The win pushes their win streak to 22 games, and they remain undefeated in the ACC.
No. 10 Florida State softball extended its win streak to 22 games Friday with a 7-2 victory over Notre Dame in the opener of the teams' three-game series.
The Seminoles are now 33-4 on the season, and remain undefeated in the ACC conference at 11-0. Notre Dame is now 16-20 overall, and 5-8 in the ACC. FSU now has the nation's longest win streak.
All American shortstop Isa Torres started the first inning with a triple, and would later score on an Irish error. The bases would then be loaded after Jaysoni Beachum, Ashtyn Danley and
Bella Ruggiero would all reach first base. Anne Hinde would then walk, scoring Beachum, and Kennedy Harp would hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Danley. The Noles were up 3-0 after the first inning.
Freshman utility player Lily Hagan would get the Irish on the board in the top of the second inning with the first of two solo home runs she would have on the day. The second inning ended 3-1 Noles.
The third inning saw Shleby McKenzie and Marin Heller walk. Torres would then score two RBI as the shortstop would hit a double scoring both runners on base. FSU ended the third up 5-1.
Neither team would score in the fourth inning, but the fifth inning had action as Hayley Griggs would homer bringing in Marin Heller who had drawn a walk earlier in the inning. FSU was up 7-1 after the fifth inning.
Notre Dame’s Hagan would show up again in the sixth inning and hit her second homer of the day. The game would end 7-2 after seven innings played.
Notre Dame had their chances as the Irish went 0-13 with runners on base, and left 13 runners on base in this contest.
Isa Torres went 4-for-4 in this game. This past week Torres was named the best shortstop in the nation by Softball America. This comes after already being named the National Player of the Week earlier this year, and being a back-to-back ACC Player of the Week. Torres leads the nation batting .630, and is yet to commit an error in the field this year.
The Noles have now beat the Irish in 17 straight games, and have won 28 of their last 30 ACC games. FSU is now 25-2 at home this season.
Game two is scheduled for Friday, April 3 at 6pm. Utility player Ashtyn Danley (7-1) will take the mound for the Seminoles.
