Building on a legendary family legacy, the versatile freshman phenom is already turning heads in Tallahassee with elite route running and a mature approach to the Seminoles' offense.
The Florida State Seminoles had their 2026 spring football practice back in March and freshman wide receiver Devin Carter has impressed coaches so far.
FSU football head coach Mike Norvell spoke about Carter and how well spring football was going for him saying, "We have high expectations for him.”
“Devin has come in with maturity,” Norvell said. “I’ve watched him for years, I’ve seen him grow up. Nothing he’s doing surprises me. Tremendous versatility, continuing to grow and get stronger with each day, but the mental side of the game, he embraces that understanding. He catches the ball well. I’m really pleased there.”
Carter has been confident as well, showcasing his talent on the field, telling reporters during a spring media session, “I came in knowing what I could do, as long as I worked hard and did what the coaches asked me.”
“It’s a good feeling to be able to have the opportunity to make plays like I’m having right now,” Carter said. “All I’m going to do is capitalize on those opportunities, and I’m not going to be surprised at what I do because I’ve been working for this. I’m ready for it, for whatever opportunity comes, and I’ll take advantage of it.”
Carter at 6'1”, 180 pounds, is a talented receiver who's athleticism aids him on the field, but he also has deep threat speed and exceptional route running. Carter can go up and get the 50/50 ball and also make plays through the middle of the field. He's versatile enough to play outside or in the slot.
There's some familiarity at FSU because Devin's dad Dexter played running back for the Seminoles and was a first round draft pick in the 1990 NFL Draft to the San Francisco 49ers.
Devin Carter was a 4-star recruit in the class of 2026. In his his senior of high school he did deal with injuries but was still able to be a factor on the field, catching 26 passes for 431 yards and five touchdowns.
Carter signed his letter of intent to play college football at FSU back in January and afterwards, when asked how excited he is to be coached by Mike Norvell, Carter added that Norvell is a "great offensive mind along with Gus Malzahn".
Carter early enrolled and could see the field this season early on, as he continues to gain confidence from the staff. Florida State will take on SMU in week 1 of the 2026 college football season.
