Humble and Hungry, Seminoles C Marcis Ponder Knows his Role

At 7-foot, 285 pounds, FSU center Marcis Ponder wants to make his presence felt around the basket.

A team first, winning culture is the foundation for any successful college basketball program. Coach Luke Loucks has built that at Florida State.

According to a story by Abraham Piroozmand of FSView, it is the reason that center Marcis Ponder chose to come to Florida State.

Ponder believes Loucks will help him develop into a dominant player that will take him to the next level.

At 7-foot, the freshman Ponder lost 15 pounds to get in basketball shape, down to 285 pounds. Before that he played football.

"My transition to basketball was hard, said Ponder. "I was over 300 pounds. I was in shape for football, but not for basketball.”

Ponder’s nickname is “Baby Shaq.” He earned that moniker as a 14-year-old phenom playing AAU ball.

Ponder lost the weight to help with his overall conditioning and to make himself a viable option on the bench at every game. Sometimes, availability is the best ability.

Improving as a player is a constant theme for Ponder. He is mature enough to know his role on the team. Ponder has set goals for himself.

“Long term goal for me would be ACC Defensive Player of the Year,” said Ponder. “I love defense, love getting rebounds, and I love blocking shots. That’s my job.”

When he learned the game of basketball in AAU ball, Ponder was just dunking the ball on each offensive possession, instead of taking traditional shots at the basket.

In a recent preseason game against Auburn, Ponder contributed 13 points and a whopping 21 rebounds in an 82-71 victory.

Ponder will get another chance to do his job on Monday, Nov. 2, against Florida A&M in Tampa, Florida.

Florida A&M is coached by former Florida State basketball star and Heisman winning quarterback Charlie Ward.

Ponder was the No. 4 center in the 2026 class, and the No. 3 overall player in Virginia. According to 247 Sports, Ponder was ranked as a Top 40 prospect nationally.

Ponder averaged 20 points, 13 rebounds, and five blocked shots per game.

He knows there will be expectations placed upon his broad shoulders. Ponder is ready to play.

Loucks and Florida State are coming off an 18-15 record (10-8 in the ACC) last season, and will have a rebuilt roster after several top players continued their basketball journey at the NBA level.

Key games to watch are:

Florida on Nov. 10

Tennessee on Dec. 1

Texas A&M on Dec. 12 (in Houston)

Houston on Dec. 20 (in Jacksonville)

Syracuse on Dec. 29

North Carolina on Jan. 13

Duke on February 16

Louisville on February 21

Loucks and the Seminoles are looking to improve on the 2025 season with Ponder and some key transfers.

A deeper run into the ACC tournament and a berth in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament is the goal for this season.

Loucks will have Ponder and the rest of his team ready to give 100 percent toward that goal.
