Facing intense pressure after two losing seasons, Norvell injects a wave of new talent, aiming to reignite championship hopes for Florida State football.

Florida State's season-ending loss to Florida on Nov. 29, 2025, cemented back-to-back losing seasons. As a result, coach Mike Norvell is heading into next season acknowledged as one of several coaches with the most to prove.

Andrea Adelson — and five other colleagues — chose which College football teams, coaches and players had the most to prove for next season. Adelson picked Norvell as her choice, citing FSU's seven wins in the past two seasons after a 13-1 campaign in 2023.

"Norvell and everyone associated with the program know the past two seasons have not been acceptable," Adelson said.

The Seminoles finished last season with a 5-7 record and posted a 2-7 record in ACC play. FSU's conference wins came against Wake Forest, 42-7, and Virginia Tech, 34-14, in November.

In 2024, Norvell and his squad put together one of the worst seasons in the decade for FSU. They finished with a 2-10 record and only won one conference game.

Because of back-to-back losing seasons, FSU made changes to its program in hopes of returning to its winning form, which the team is known for.

"Florida State made structural changes to its personnel department and went heavy into the portal again to try to win now," Adelson added.

Norvell and his coaching staff brought in 23 new transfers from this year's portal cycle.

Ten offensive players, eight defensive players and five special teams players became the new additions to the roster.

Entering his seventh year leading FSU, with new transfers and incoming freshmen, Norvell has championship aspirations despite two consecutive losing seasons.

"I'm going to evaluate all parts of what we can do to put ourselves in position to compete for a championship," Norvell said in his Signing Day press conference

The Seminoles won their last conference championship following their 13-1 season against the then-No. 14 Louisville Cardinals, 16-6. The year was 2023.

A significant factor in Norvell's championship aspirations is who's leading FSU at the quarterback position.

As spring football returns, Kevin Sperry and Auburn transfer Ashton Daniels are competing for the starting job.

Sperry redshirted last year, appearing in three games and completing 12-for-17 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns.

Daniels earned a redshirt after playing only four games for the Auburn Tigers.

However, his 2023 and 2024 seasons at Stanford highlight his capability to lead the Seminoles despite his volatility. Daniels completed 361-for-596 passes for 3,947 yards, 21 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.

The competition between Sperry and Daniels earned high praise from Norvell, as he said he wants to see those two challenge each other and see who leads in production.

"When they step on the field, you have 10 other guys that are playing better because of what they do and the position that we put ourselves in," Norvell said in his press conference before the start of spring football.

Norvell's journey to compete for a championship and witness his team return to form begins against the New Mexico Aggies on Aug. 29 at Doak Campbell Stadium.
