Standing 6-foot-6 with a mid-90s fastball, this imposing right-hander returns to his home state to anchor a revamped pitching staff following potential heavy losses to the MLB Draft.
As the sports calendar slowly turns to football, excruciatingly slow at that, the Florida State baseball program continues to bolster their 2027 roster by landing South Carolina right-handed pitcher Alex Philpott from the transfer portal.
Philpott, a Florida native, appeared in 16 games for the Gamecocks during the 2025 season and posted a 6.51 ERA. While he did not earn any wins, Philpott recorded 19 strikeouts in 27.2 innings pitched with 15 walks.
At 6-foot-6, 200 pounds, Philpott is an imposing presence on the mound. He has command of three pitches: a fastball that hits the catcher’s mitt in the mid-90 mph range, a change up and a breaking ball.
Before his stint with the Gamecocks, Philpott pitched two seasons with the Florida Gators and recorded 72 strikeouts. In 2025, Philpott racked up 44 strikeouts against 18 walks.
As a freshman in 2024, Philpott appeared in 13 games and picked up a couple of wins and struck out 28 batters in 30 innings pitched. He also pitched in the College World Series.
Philpott comes to a Florida State team whose pitching staff is all but decimated when you consider the starting rotation from the 2026 season alone could be drafted in the Major League Draft this week. Wes Mendes, Trey Beard and Bryson Moore will likely hear their names called early as their baseball journey continues to the next level.
Mendes was the ACC Pitcher of the Year after posting 125 strikeouts and only 25 walks. With a 9-3 record, Mendes posted an ERA of 2.90, a WHIP of 1.02, and allowed a batting average of just .207 against him. Mendes could hear his name called in the first three rounds of the draft.
As the roster continues to fill out with talented transfers, Philpott will join fellow transfer pitchers Cayden Suchy (2026 Big East Pitcher of the Year at UConn) and Sebastian Lippman from Florida Gulf Coast University.
Philpott will learn the history and tradition of Florida State baseball and will develop the skills necessary to make it to the major leagues.
But first, Philpott must develop into a dominant pitcher to get the Seminoles back to the super regionals and beyond.
