Boasting an elite recruiting pedigree and a history of grooming NFL talent, new defensive specialist Nick Williams brings a ruthless, ball-hawking mindset to the Florida State sidelines.
Florida State coach Mike Norvell made some changes to his coaching staff at the conclusion of last season, adding an assistant on defense to help the Seminoles become game changers in 2026.
Nick Williams arrived at Florida State from Georgia, an area of the country that is a recruiting hotbed for the Seminoles. He is a young coach, in his 30s, and has experience as a player and coach in Georgia.
So, his familiarity with the talent in that state is critical for Seminoles when it comes to recruiting and roster management.
Nick Williams
As Edges Coach/Pass Rush Specialist, Nick Williams is in his first season with the Seminoles. Williams brings a ton of experience to Florida State. Williams’ coaching acumen is a product of stints with the Georgia Bulldogs, Texas A&M, Colorado Buffaloes and Syracuse Orange.
Williams coached two seasons at Syracuse, helped lead the Orange to a 10-3 record and final AP ranking of No. 20 in 2024. That season, the Orange chalked up wins over three ranked teams.
Williams coached defender Fadil Diggs to All-ACC honors and, as a result, Diggs heard his name called at the 2025 NFL Draft. Diggs recorded 7.5 sacks and 14 tackles for loss in 2024.
Williams was on Jimbo Fisher’s staff at Texas A&M and in 2021, and he coached the Aggies to a No. 14 ranking in total defense. All starters on the defensive line under Williams’ watch that season were drafted into the NFL.
As a collegiate star, Williams played in 32 games at Georgia before transferring to North Alabama, where he was a standout.
Brandon Harris gets Poached by Florida
Last December, Norvell thought he had also added a talented cornerbacks coach in Brandon Harris, who played at Miami and coached at UCF. Harris had coached the Knights pass defense to a top 25 ranking last season.
But at the last minute, new Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall swooped in and snatched Harris from Norvell’s clutches. Harris will now wear blue and orange on the sideline at The Swamp this season, a huge loss for the Seminoles both from a coaching and recruiting standpoint.
William’s arrival in Tallahassee comes at a critical time for the Seminoles defense. There is plenty of room for improvement, especially along the defensive line. An aggressive, ball-hawking defense that separates the ball from the ball carrier, stops running backs and quarterbacks in their tracks, is what needed this season for Florida State.
Williams is the man to install that mindset into the Seminoles defenders. The war chant will take on a different meaning this season as Williams leads the Seminoles defense down the war path to what could be more victories on the gridiron.
