Plunging recruiting ranks and a dismal losing record have Mike Norvell facing a potential $58 million buyout as insiders signal his tenure in Tallahassee is nearing its end.
Mike Norvell is swamped with hot-seat talks heading into the 2026 season, and the situation isn’t looking too great.
A major point of contention among the Florida State fans this past offseason has been the embarrassing Class of 2027 recruiting class rankings.
The Seminoles dropped from being the No. 45 class to being the No. 55 class in a month, which clearly shows that the Florida State staff has been unable to pick up their rankings or required commits.
As if last season’s 5-7 record, six of those losses against ACC teams weren’t enough, the sheer lack of recruiting pace is just pouring gasoline on the fire.
Making matters worse for Norvell was ‘The Film Guy Network’s’ Brooks Austin. On his podcast, Austin believes that saving his job will almost be a pipedream, saying "I think Mike Norvell is already fried."
"I think they know they're firing him,” Austin said. “I think, hey, unless we go 9-3 or something like that out of nowhere, we're probably going to get rid of you, and we're probably going to eat whatever's left of the buyout. It's got to be embarrassing for the athletic department to fire him. So, it's got to be like 8-4."
Mike Norvell’s buyout
Following his 13-0 regular season and ACC Championship run in 2023, FSU rewarded Norvell with a massive eight-year extension. It averages out to more than $10 million per season, cementing him as one of the highest-paid head coaches in college football. The extension binds Norvell to Tallahassee all the way through the 2031.
If Florida State decides to part ways with Norvell this offseason, or during the 2026 regular season, the Seminoles would owe their head coach roughly $58.4 million.
That makes Norvell’s buyout the second-highest in college football history, behind only Jimbo Fisher’s $76.8 million from Texas A&M.
He would receive $800,000 a month through 2031 if fired after this season.

Per ON3, the cost of firing Norvell and his staff, along with making the next hire, would be in the $100 million range.
That’s why the chances of the FSU athletic department giving Norvell a final shot in the 2026 season to prove himself are still there.
