The Florida State (10-2) baseball team got some serious revenge against the Mercer Bears in Wednesday night's contest. The Noles, who lost their last two games against Mercer were outscored 22-9 in those games. Wednesday they had a 13 run second inning that tied a school record for most points in an inning. The Seminoles beat Mercer 22-5 in a game that would end after seven innings. The garnet and gold has won six straight games since losing back to back games in Arlington, TX at the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series February 20-22.
The run rule in the ACC states that the game ends after seven innings if a team is up by 10. This rule is not used in the NCAA tournament, or the College World Series. The No. 20 Seminoles scored their runs in bulk, scoring not just the 13 runs in the second inning, but also four runs in the fourth inning, and five runs in the fifth inning.
As a team the Noles had 13 hits, three doubles, and two home runs. On the mound FSU faced 38 batters, striking out seven while giving up five earned runs on 11 hits to the Bears.
WHO WERE THE STARS OF THE GAME
Sophomore right fielder Noah Sheffield and freshman infielder Will Bavaro had significant personal achievements as both players hit their first collegiate home runs. Sheffield finished with four RBI, and two runs. Bavaro finished the game with three runs, two hits, and four RBI. For Bavaro the three run homer was also his first college hit.
Freshman outfielder John Stuetzer had two hits while scoring three runs, junior infielder Cal Fisher and junior outfielder Chase Williams each had three runs as well. In total the Noles had eight players score at least two runs.
Junior pitcher Cooper Whited got the win as the lefty led the Noles with three innings pitched. The transfer from Gulf Coast State College gave up five hits, had two strikeouts, and one earned run.
NEXT FOR THE NOLES
The Noles start a three game home series against Northern Kentucky (7-4) starting Friday March 6. The unranked Norse are riding a five game win streak heading into this series.
The Seminoles will head to Gainesville FL to play the No. 8 Florida Gators (23-1) on Tuesday, March 10.
With both NKU and FSU riding win streaks, the first match up on Friday should be exciting. I wouldn't be surprised if the Noles swept NKU as the Gators will be a tough road game for the Noles
