The famed defensive lineman twins were involved in a widely debated transfer portal story. Here's how Seminoles GM John Garrett kept them.
Florida State football came close to losing two famed twins. General manager John Garrett helped provide the assist to re-win Mandrell and Darryll Desir.
Both brothers arrived as prized Miami finds for FSU and swiftly impacted the defensive line. But then handed Seminole fans a scare when they tested the College Football Transfer Portal waters.
Ultimately, the Desirs returned to Tallahassee which got FSU fans to breathe a sigh of relief. But how were Garrett and the front office able to get it done?
The GM spoke one-on-one with Noles247 about the process to retain both defenders. Including sharing the "evaluation" aspect that led to them winning back the DLs.
"It was important to just in general retain good players. You can't let good players out of the building," Garrett began. "Based upon the evaluation, they're good players at a position that's hard to find guys that are talented enough, big enough and disruptive enough to play for us in our defense. So it became an important thing for us to do."
By luring back the twins, there was no dire need to go after anymore defensive trench men.
"Overall, I'm pleased with our defensive line," Garrett said. "We have a good combination of experience and up and coming, talented, inexperienced players that need to prove they can get on the field. But the way they are moving around and the potential and growth and size as they work in the weight room and train, I think we had a defensive line that is talented with others right there in the hopper so to speak, ready to earn some playing time."
Darryll Desir was rated as a four-star portal entry. He piled 15 tackles including eight solo stops in rotational duty while grabbing one sack. Mandrell was even more impactful: 13 solo tackles featuring 6.5 sacks (led all Seminole defenders). Mandrell Desir also led the 'Noles with 7.5 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. He even delivered a five-game streak of notching one sack from Oct. 11 to Nov. 21.
The Desirs are a cross between portal win and major roster retainment victory for Garrett and the FSU front office. This time they'll have a new quarterback to team with in Ashton Daniels via Auburn/Stanford.
