For Houston Astros' outfielder Cam Smith, who starred for the Florida State Seminoles on the diamond, it's been a fun ride into baseball's postseason.

But for Smith, national notoriety and attention from MLB scouts came from his time in the Garnet & Gold. Playing mostly third base at the time, he put up tremendous numbers for the 'Noles during his time in the collegiate ranks. Originally recruited as a shortstop, Smith converted to third base during his time in Tallahassee.

In his final year as a Seminole, Smith was a man among boys, hitting .387 with 16 home runs, 57 RBI, and 82 runs scored in 269 at-bats across 66 games. For the year, he walked almost as many times as he struck out. The star slugger had 48 Ks and 44 walks.

The Chicago Cubs selected Smith with the 14th overall pick in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft, directly out of FSU. They would later trade him to the Astros when they sent 

For Houston, Smith has been a revelation on defense after converting to the outfield. This season, he ranked first in putouts, third in errors, and fifth in outfield assists. He was second in the league in triples and had a .210 batting average, 21 home runs, 56 RBI, 12 stolen bases, and a .654 slugging percentage. And while his average may have been a bit low, his power numbers and overall production were enough to warrant him as an established big-league batter.

Earlier this year, Astros manager Joe Espada commented on the progress the former FSU star has made this season in the big leagues.

"He's been very consistent, putting some good swings on pitches that we know he can handle," the skipper stated, according to a Houston Chronicle report. "He looks really good offensively; I really like the at-bats."

Now, with the MLB Playoffs in full swing, Smith and his team are locked in combat with the Chicago White Sox. They opened up their set on Tuesday with a 6-3 loss to the Pale Hose. Smith accounted for one of Houston's six total hits, going 1-for-4 and making a terrific defensive play in the outfield. 

Down 1-0, Smith and his 'mates will try to right the ship when they take the field against Chicago on Tuesday night at Daikin Park. That will be a tough order against the 84-78 Sox, who led the American League Central Division for much of the season before falling one game short of the Cleveland Indians.

The Astros (81-81, AL West Champions) will face Chicago righthander Sean Burke (11-7, 3.34 ERA, 185 Strikeouts in 202), which might be all-or-nothing for Smith. The youngster is 1-for-5 in his career against the Windy City righthander.
