Florida State basketball ends February by pulling off a massive recruiting win.
Martay Barnes choosing the Seminoles on Thursday hands FSU a top 100 shooting guard. Plus also gives head coach Luke Loucks a future scoring weapon to unleash.
Even college basketball analyst for CBS Sports Adam Finkelstein raved about the fit the moment the addition got finalized.
Finkelstein revealed what FSU's true vision is under Loucks and how it connects to adding Barnes.
"On the floor, it's become clear that the Seminoles will play fast and value the three-point line," Finkelstein wrote. "They currently rank 25th in the country in adjusted tempo and 18th overall in average offensive possession length, all while taking over 50% of their shots from behind the three-point line."
So how does the 6-foot-2 shooter fit into the culture Loucks is attempting to create?
"Barnes is at his best in the open floor, so he should thrive in that type of transition system," Finkelstein wrote. "If the shooting clicks as expected, the fit will be doubly as good, but his ability to take care of the basketball will likely be a requisite."
Finkelstein described Barnes as a "playmaking guard" type who's "in constant attack mode on both ends of the floor." Barnes' acceleration on the floor are another plus.
"He has a lot of speed and sheer burst, which he uses to attack the rim, but can also vary his pace with stop-and-go moves to get a piece of the paint when the game slows down," Finkelstein said.
Barnes must cut down on turnovers moving forward into his collegiate career. He also developed a habit of being a streaky shooter. But brings "untapped potential" as Finklestein stated.
The CBB insider includes how Barnes presents an aggressive playmaker side on the defensive end who can force turnovers -- averaging 1.8 steals a game.
Overall, the analyst loves the fit...to the point he believes Barnes can start right away after this season.
"There should also be an immediate opportunity in the backcourt as both Robert McCray, who is the team's leading scorer, and Kobe Magee are out of eligibility, creating a void of over 48 minutes per game," Finkelstein said.
Barnes rises as a pivotal local pickup too out of The Academy of Central Florida in Orlando. He turns down Auburn for FSU in shutting down his recruitment. Barnes even teased his interest in the Noles back on Feb. 18.
