Mike Norvell is hitting January with reinstalling enthusiasm at Florida State his mission.
He's already helped bring back famed defenders Mandrell and Darryll Desir after briefly entering the transfer portal. He's welcomed back star wide receiver Duce Robinson too.
But now he's handing a Seminoles legend a new role.
Ernie Sims goes from assistant linebackers coach to having full reins of the position group for 2026. It means a Seminoles legend earned a promotion through Norvell.
The head coach explained why he opted for the in-house move via a news release from the university.
"Ernie is Florida State through-and-through," Norvell said. "He grew up in Tallahassee, developed into one of the top recruits in the country and chose to stay home at Florida State.
"As a player here, he was legendary for his work ethic and attacking style of play, and he became a top pick in the Draft and earned a lengthy playing career in the NFL," Norvell added.
But then he revealed the real reason why Sims received his internal coaching ascension.
"I've enjoyed seeing how recruits and our current players respond to his teaching since he came back to join our staff," Norvell said. "Ernie's passion for Florida State is inspiring to all he is around. His leadership of the position and the ability to develop young people with the skills needed will help take the linebacker position to the next level."
Sims starred in Tallahassee from 2003 to 2005. But he rose to CFB fame during the latter season -- collecting 10 tackles for a loss with 2.5 sacks. He eventually became a top 10 draft pick to the Detroit Lions in 2006.
Sims himself shared his appreciation for staying on board at FSU.
"With great honor and gratitude, my family and I accept this phenomenal opportunity to serve, represent and uphold the true standard of a Florida State Seminole," Sims said through the university.
He then outlined the "standard" he wants FSU to uphold while he's LB coach.
"This standard is defined by hard work, commitment, integrity, dominance and excellence," Sims said. "Through God's grace and mercy, the experiences He has directed in my life have prepared me for this moment, and I'm set to attack the work ahead to achieve great things for Florida State."
He'll have former Southern Miss star Chris Jones to work with come spring. Jones committed to FSU via the portal and brings 133 tackles from 2025 with him to Tallahassee.
