After a stunning sweep at Stanford, Florida State softball faces the Tar Heels, aiming to rebound on home turf.
No. 9 Florida State softball saw its 25-game winning streak end in emphatic fashion Sunday, as the Seminoles fell 6-5 in eight innings at Stanford Softball Stadium.
No. 23-ranked Stanford swept what until last weekend had been a juggernaut Noles squad.
Florida State (36-7, 12-3 ACC) dropped consecutive games for the first time this season and suffered its first conference losses of the year in a series that quickly shifted momentum away from the Seminoles. Stanford improved to 26-12 (12-6), using a late rally and extra-inning execution to secure the win.
The Seminoles struck first in the opening inning when Bella Ruggerio delivered an RBI single to score Jaysoni Beachum, who had reached earlier and advanced into scoring position. Stanford answered immediately, plating three runs on five hits in the bottom half to take a 3-1 lead.
After two scoreless innings, Florida State surged ahead in the fourth. Isa Torres launched a three-run home run -- her 10th of the season -- to give the Seminoles a 4-3 advantage. Beachum added to the lead in the sixth with a solo shot to center field, pushing the margin to 5-3.
Stanford responded in the bottom of the sixth, rallying to score twice and tie the game at 5-5. Neither team broke through in the seventh, sending the game into extra innings.
In the eighth, Stanford loaded the bases and ended it on a walk-off single by Jade Berry, sealing the 6-5 victory.
Beachum paced Florida State offensively, going 3-for-5 while extending her on-base streak to 31 games. Torres’ home run marked a career-high total, continuing a standout season for the All-American shortstop.
Florida State returns home to open a three-game series against the North Carolina Tar Heels softball beginning Frida6, April 17, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
