Injuries threaten the Knights' backfield while the second-ranked Cougars eye a Big 12 statement. Experts break down the trench warfare and backup playmakers deciding this conference clash.

A tenuous quarterback situation and "next man up" mentalities dominate an exciting matchup between No. 2-rank BYU Cougars and the faltering UCF Knights.

While it's not a heavyweight bout by any stretch, BYU's near-top ranking on the AP polls and a scrappy UCF club make for this week's Roundtable College Football Game of the Week.

We reached out to BYU Roundtable publisher Shandel Richardson and UCF Roundtable publisher Jeff Hauser for an in-depth look at both sides of the contest.  Here's everything you need to know:

1. What is the biggest story for each team heading into the matchup?

UCF RTB: The health of UCF quarterback Alonza Barnett. He was reportedly ruled out, but nothing has been confirmed. Either way, it's going to be shaky at the position for the Knights this weekend.

Related stories

BYU RTB: BYU is the highest-ranked Big 12 team right now and has become the team to beat in the conference. This is rare territory for Head Coach Kalani Sitake's team and new heights for the program since its national championship in 1984.

2. What is the most important matchup in this game?

UCF RTB: As always, it's the offensive line. Whoever controls the line of scrimmage will dominate this one. BYU already holds a huge advantage.

BYU RTB: The beef in the trenches. BYU's offensive line won many one-on-one battles against Notre Dame. Overall, the Cougars looked crisp midway through the season by allowing quarterback Bear Bachmeier to work his magic.

3. Which player from each team isn’t talked about enough but could play a huge role?

UCF RTB: Backup quarterback Keyone Jenkins is the X-factor, if there is even one. He's going to have to play well if the Knights are going to have any chance of winning. Even then, it's going to be tough for UCF.

BYU RTB: Preston Rex. The Cougars' backup running back has been key since Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year LJ Martin went down with a leg injury. He helped carry the load out of the backfield for BYU last week. Expect more of Rex to help alleviate pressure on Bachmeier.

4. What is each team’s biggest Achilles heel?

UCF RTB: The quarterback situation is obviously the biggest heel for the Knights. This marks two straight years they have dealt with this problem. It could ultimately ruin the season again.

BYU RTB: The injury situation is obviously concerning for Sitake and his staff. Being without Martin hurts. He's one of three players BYU couldn't afford to lose. However, the Cougars' offense has stepped up to the challenge of replacing his production.

5. What is your final score prediction?

UCF RTB: BYU 35, UCF 10

BYU RTB: BYU 45, UCF 13
