The Georgia Bulldogs have to be at the absolute top of their game this upcoming week.
The Georgia Bulldogs are getting set for what may be the biggest home game of the season this week against the Oklahoma Sooners next Saturday afternoon at Sanford Stadium.
Going into the year, this was looked at as a potential star-studded showdown between the two-time defending SEC champion and an Oklahoma team who could be a sleeper to unseat the Dawgs. While the Sooners have not lost any ground on the race in the conference, they are certainly being looked at differently after losing in week two to a Michigan team who was a little bit down and out.
Now, while this is still a big game for Georgia, Oklahoma taking a loss before it removes some from the magnitude at least in terms of this being such an epic showdown. This may be true for the fans, but the team and coaching staff cannot afford to think like this, because despite some very real flaws, this Sooners team is capable of making it a very tough night in Athens.
Georgia Could Fall Victim to Oklahoma Pass Rush
The Sooners, while obviously having some serious problems on the offensive side of the ball and in the passing game, are still going to be a defense that is an absolute handful to deal with. Brent Venables is always going to have a defense that gives opposing quarterbacks problems, and this may very well be the best one he has had since coming to Norman.
Offensively, John Mateer has not been able to find the success he saw early last season before his thumb surgery and looks like the same struggles are still present, but the last thing Georgia wants to do is give him confidence. Spotting him and the Sooners points by a turnover early in the game would be exactly the way to do just that.
At the end of the day, the Bulldogs are a much better team than Oklahoma, and with the game being at home, the expectation is as it should be for them to win and do it in at least somewhat convincing fashion.
Georgia must look at the Sooners as a threat rather than a wounded animal though, because if they don't Oklahoma is absolutely capable of coming into Athens and leaving with a victory.
Kirby Smart does as good a job as anyone of having his team ready to play, and this must be the case once again against the Sooners.
