The Georgia Bulldogs head coach continues to be the voice of the sport.
The Georgia Bulldogs have made it through SEC Media Days week in Tampa without any major headlines, the latest sign that the season will be here before fans know it.
Now that talking season has come to a close, the page is almost ready to be turned to actual games on the field. But looking back at the week for the Bulldogs, some thought-provoking answers were given to some tough questions by head coach Kirby Smart as well as the three stars he brought with him.
Over the last couple of years, Smart has become arguably the most important voice in the entire sport, so when he speaks on the bigger issues, folks pull up a chair and listen. It was his answer on how leaders operate differently in the changing era of the sport though that should remind fans exactly what this program is about.
Smart Still Focused on Winning Football Games at Georgia
"What wins football games has not changed," Smart said when asked about the change in operations for a head coach. "Each coach has to decide within their own program what they want to major in. You’ve got to be able to wear multiple hats. But you’ve got to choose which hats you want to wear the best."
Smart continued the answer to show why he's still the best in the sport in terms of being willing to adapt.
"I’m not afraid to change what we need to change to be successful," he said. "I don’t have an ego that says you have to do it my way. I want to hear how you want to do it, and let’s find the best way."
While Bulldogs fans are frustrated by the way the last three years have ended, they cannot take what they have in Kirby Smart for granted. When he does decide he's finished, something which may not be all that far down the line, only then will Georgia realize what it is they had in their head coach and will never have anything like it again.
Nobody is more frustrated than those within the building that the Bulldogs have been unable to win a national title, but they have the right man in charge to adapt and get them back to the top of the sport. Whether that means changing the entire philosophy or simply re-tooling remains to be seen, but it would be foolish to bet against Smart finding the answer.
As he said, what wins football games has not changed, and not many are better than Georgia at doing just that.
