The Georgia Bulldogs could have some depth issues at running back.
The Georgia Bulldogs are headed into another rivalry game this week against the Auburn Tigers, trying to make it 10 wins in a row in the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry.
As it turns out though, Kirby Smart's team is going to be a little bit banged up as they try to avoid a first home defeat against Auburn in more than two decades. As was the case last week, the running back room is going to be a bit thin. With the reporting around Chauncey Bowens as murky as ever, he has been ruled out for the second straight week and could wind up missing more time than that.
Reports from Pete Thamel of ESPN indicated that while Nate Frazier is not on the injury report, he was not last week either but still did not end up playing in the win over Alabama.
Georgia Likely Down Two Running Backs Again
Bowens is ruled out along with Isiah Canion, who has not seen much work this season. Thomas Blackshear is also out once again, but this is not a huge surprise. The bigger surprising thing is KJ Bolden being listed as questionable, potentially banged up from the Alabama game but dealing with an unknown injury.
Regardless, it looks like it could be a significant opportunity once again for guys like Dwight Phillips Jr. and Bo Walker to tote the rock and showcase the depth that Georgia has at the position. Given what the Dawgs proved against the Crimson Tide, they should be able to run the ball with success once again versus Auburn even without Bowens and likely Frazier as well.
As Georgia tries to stay undefeated and keep the winning streak against Auburn alive, there is going to be serious urgency from this team to play as well as they did last week, which can often be difficult to replicate. If Gunner Stockton can keep up his strong level of play, this Dawgs team is going to be tough for anyone they face to have a real chance of winning.
Once again though, he is going to be doing it with a little bit of a shorthanded running back room. As for what that means moving forward for the rest of the season, it remains to be seen, but Georgia certainly passed the first test with a depleted running back room.
Time will tell if they can pass the next one as well.
