The leader of the University of Georgia has placed himself at the forefront of the fight.

This week at the SEC Spring Meetings in Destin, it feels like the future of college football is at stake as coaches, athletic directors and presidents descend on the beach to talk about the issues impacting the sport.

Among the popular topics has of course been the potential expansion of the College Football Playoff, something which the SEC is really the only holdout on as far as the 24-team field goes. Beyond just the CFP though, there are real conversations being had about how to get guardrails on a system which has only become more chaotic by the day.

University of Georgia President Jere Morehead spoke with Paul Finebaum this week, and it sounds like he knows college sports is on the brink of no point of return, something which he very much told the truth about in his appearance.

Morehead Plainly Warns 'Anarchy' is Near

"Pretty close to anarchy," he when asked what the current state is. "Pretty close. I think time is running out on us…What have we accomplished in the last year? Nothing, absolutely no progress. I’d say we’re in a worst position now than we were a year ago and that’s concerning to me.

"Unfortunately, we haven’t gone anywhere, we’re stuck. We’re having basically the same conversations we were a year ago, and that’s very frustrating. I hope out of this meeting we don’t end and say, ‘well we’re going to wait’ before we start actually planning the next steps."

Whether or not Morehead's warning is actually headed remains to be seen, however not many disagree with what he's saying at this point. Government initiatives, attempted rules overhauls and every attempt in between has proven to fall flat on its face, and things have never been more out of control.

Will Morehead's Warning Be Heard?

A bipartisan Senate bill which is expected to be introduced this week made some headlines this week and inspired hope that perhaps the NCAA could be given some antitrust exemption to enforce its own rules.

Morehead is correct in pointing out how all attempts to this point have failed to slow down the progression of the system, and it does feel like things are on the brink of the breaking point.

Everyone agrees the direction things are headed is not sustainable for the future of college athletics, but if Morehead's warning is not taken seriously, we may find out what that non-sustainable future of the sport looks like.
