The Georgia Bulldogs head coach and the commissioner of the SEC may not be seeing eye to eye.
Georgia Bulldogs fans and the rest of the SEC will be watching this week in Destin very closely as coaches and athletic directors from around the conference meet up for the annual spring meetings.
As a prelude to SEC Media Days, fans who are ready for football season to start will cling onto any headline out of Florida, and this offseason, it's no secret that the hottest topic has been potential expansion of the College Football Playoff just two years after it went from four teams to 12.
With the latest proposal being a cataclysmic expansion to 24 teams which could effectively gut the regular season, Kirby Smart raised some eyebrows this offseason when he did not push back on that and said more than 12 is necessary.
As of now, the SEC is the only conference pushing back on that, and Greg Sankey told media on Monday that his opinion there has not changed.
Sankey Still Seems Resistant to 24-Team CFP Field
"When professional sports have added to their postseason, it's always been a small adjustment," Sankey said. "Four to twelve was monumental, but I think it was justifiable. You want to be careful about how far you go."
Sankey, who never boxes himself into one talking point, certainly did not completely shut down the huge expansion proposal and actually talked about the value it could provide by bringing other teams into the conversation.
After months of discourse though, it does seem his preference unlike others is a field of 16 teams or even less rather than 24.
Where This Leaves Georgia, Rest of SEC
As for fanbases, a 24-team field has become one of the most universally disliked proposals we have seen in some time. While fan opinion is one thing though, Smart and the other coaches do seem to be pushing for more than 16, and it's understandable why.
Making a playoff easier to qualify for opens up coaches to have increased job security, whether there is any real difference in results or not.
While this may not be an issue for Smart, it certainly is for countless of his peers, so seeing coach support for expansion is not surprising. With that being said, the regular season of this sport is at risk, and every headline that arises seems to move further and further in that direction.
Whether or not anything comes from spring meetings this week in terms of a final decision remains to be seen, however this topic is not going away anytime soon.
