The Georgia Bulldogs have an absolutely nasty unit.
The Georgia Bulldogs are headed into the regular season just about a month and a half from now ready to roll over everyone in their path in pursuit of another national championship.
Of course, there are question marks on this roster but at the end of the day, nobody has earned the benefit of the doubt more than Kirby Smart. Fans have faith issues like inexperience in the wide receiver room and possible lack of depth at edge rusher are going to be solved, but looking at one side of the ball as a whole, there should be serious excitement.
The Dawgs went undefeated in the 2021 regular season largely on the backs of the best defense in school history and one of the best of the last 25 years in all of college football. After losing the SEC title game, that defense would rebound to vault Georgia to its first national championship in more than four decades, and even though they would win again the following year, the program has not seen a defense as dominant as 2021 since.
In 2026 though, that may be set to change.
Kirby Smart Has Best Unit Since 2021 On Paper This Year
Things are going to have to gel and puzzle pieces find a way to fit, but without a doubt going into a season, fans have not had reason to feel this good about a Bulldog defense since that fateful 2021 campaign. An experienced interior defensive line anchored by Elijah Griffin and Jordan Hall is backed up by without a doubt the deepest linebacker room in the country with four returning heavy contributors there.
In the secondary, KJ Bolden and a whole lot of potential anchors the back end while Ellis Robinson IV and Demello Jones have a chance to be the best cornerback duo in the SEC.
Potential of course is meaningless without proving it, but the most encouraging thing about this defense is the fact that most of it has already proven it can get this done at the highest level.
Georgia has built an identity on playing great defense, and it looks like they are due to achieve that identity again this year. This looks like a unit on paper though that has a chance to transcend great, and for the first time in a few years in Athens, take that next step and actually become truly elite.
