The Georgia Bulldogs are headed into the 2026 season looking to get back to their winning ways following three seasons that have not produced the end results fans would have hoped for.
While the last two years have produced SEC titles, they have also ended with defeats in the first two College Football Playoff games for the Bulldogs and ultimately, the goal was not even close to met. In both games, it was Gunner Stockton at quarterback, albeit two years ago he was filling in due to injury versus his first campaign as a full-time starter last year.
And even though things did not go Georgia's way, Stockton proved beyond a shadow of a doubt during his first season that he is capable of being everything this team needs and more in order to reach their full potential.
The near 3,000 passing yards, 24 touchdowns and five interceptions while adding another close to 500 yards and 10 scores on the ground were impressive stats, but what should make fans more confident than anything else with Stockton is the way he performed late in games.
Stockton Has Clutch Gene That Cannot Be Taught
Time and time again, Stockton has been at his best when the lights were brightest. Trailing by eight in the game's final minutes on the road in Knoxville against Tennessee, it was Stockton who came up huge to get his team a win.
Against Ole Miss and trailing at half, Stockton played the best half of his career with three touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs back and secure another huge win.
Against Texas it was Stockton who led the charge on offense with four touchdown passes for another statement victory.
Even in his first real game action after Carson Beck's injury in the SEC Championship, Stockton came in and helped lead the comeback victory over the Longhorns two years ago.
Whenever Georgia has needed him most, Stockton has found a way to come through in the clutch and get it done. Any fan who does not trust him at this point should be asking themselves why that is, because he has more than held up his end of the bargain throughout his career.
Ultimately, a team goes beyond just the quarterback and the Bulldogs lack of skill position experience in terms of who Stockton is throwing to could come back to bite them.
