Katin Houser's return to the field wasn't always pretty, but the Fighting Illini's starting quarterback found his groove on Saturday to lead Illinois to victory.
Illinois (5-3, 3-2 B1G) defeated Maryland (2-5, 0-5 B1G), 20-17, to win its third straight and pull within one game of bowl eligibility. Kicker Ethan Moczulski made a 26-yard field goal as time expired to secure the victory.
Houser went 18-for-32 for 223 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception. He broke his right hand during a game against Michigan State on Oct. 10, then underwent surgery four days later, which was expected to sideline him for four to six weeks. Houser made his return just three weeks after suffering the injury to his throwing hand.
Collin Dixon caught six passes for 103 yards. Illinois ran for 184 yards, led by a three-headed attack of true freshman Javari Barnett, Aidan Laughery and Jordan Anderson.
Illinois trailed for most of the game before scoring 10 points in the fourth quarter.

Mandatory Credit: Daniel Kucin Jr.-Imagn Images Houser got off to a rocky start. He found Hudson Clement on a five-yard completion to start the game, but overthrew Dixon on his second pass. The poor throw was intercepted by Maryland defender Messiah Delhomme, whose 43-yard return put the Terrapins deep in Illini territory.
Illinois caught a break when Terps running back DeJuan Williams fumbled at the goal line. Following a short Illini punt, though, Maryland quarterback Malik Washington made Illinois pay with his legs. Washington scrambled for 21 yards on third-and-12, then used a designed run to score the game's first touchdown from eight yards out.
Houser connected with Dixon on a deep pass for 34 yards, but Illinois' third drive ultimately ended in a punt. Maryland threatened toward the end of the first quarter before Illini defensive back Tanner Heckel intercepted Washington on third down.
Both offenses stalled for much of the second quarter. The Illini managed to get into field-goal range, but Moczulski missed wide left from 52 yards out.
On Illinois' final possession of the first half, Houser led his team on a scoring drive that ended in the end zone. He threw a 16-yard touchdown to Brayden Trimble that tied the game at seven apiece entering the break.
Maryland wasted no time at the start of the third quarter, marching down the field on a seven-play, 65-yard drive that took less than four minutes. The Terps had four plays of at least 10 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown run from Williams.
Houser picked up right where he left off as well, connecting with Dixon on a 27-yard completion. Moczulski converted on a 45-yard field goal that cut Illinois' deficit to four.
Illinois reached the end zone again on the first play of the fourth quarter. Barnett broke through the Terrapin defense and ran 64 yards for the touchdown, giving Illinois its first lead of the day.
Terrapins kicker Sean O'Haire tied the game up with a 46-yard field goal.
After both teams traded punts, Illinois got the ball back with 5:45 remaining. Houser and a strong running game methodically led the Fighting Illini into enemy territory while winding the clock. Anderson kneeled the ball at the two-yard line to set up Moczulski's game-winning field goal.
Illinois' final four games this season are against teams with a winning record. The Illini need to win one of those four games to clinch bowl eligibility for a third consecutive year.
