By withholding Bobby Hauck’s replacement, Bret Bielema forces Purdue to scout in the dark, turning a sudden coaching shakeup into a strategic tactical advantage for the struggling Illini.
Bret Bielema met with media on Monday and answered many questions in regards to the dismissal of defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck over the weekend.
But the question he did not answer may be equally as important.
Bielema took time to explain how the brief Hauck tenure came to an end but chose not to ultimately disclose who the replacement was going to be for the upcoming Homecoming matchup against Purdue.
For Illinois, the uncertainty may be a part of the plan.
The two logical internal candidates are Ronnie Bradford and Roger Cooper. Both were brought along because of their past history with Hauck and their experience calling plays for the 3-3-5 scheme.
Who the ultimate choice is, will not be found out until after Saturday's matchup.
Bret Beliema chose not to disclose any information about the new defensive coordinatorIf Bret had gone to the podium and designated a play caller, then Purdue head coach Barry Odom and his staff could spend the rest of the week analyzing and diagnosing the tape of the chosen candidate. They could review every snap during Bradford's 2023 season as DC in Montana and taken notes on what extra wrinkles his style of play might bring.
Same could be said for Cooper who has more recent history as defensive coordinator.
By staying quiet, coach Bielema and the staff are not just keeping the fans out of the loop, but more importantly the Purdue Boilermakers as well.
With a 2-2 start to the season, it is arguable that the matchup on Sunday is a must-win game for the Illini. A loss to Purdue, who has not won a Big Ten game since Odom took over, could ignite a collapse in morale in the team who is already dealing with a drastic coaching change so early in the season.
It is hard to argue that making a coaching change this early is an ideal scenario for Illinois, but there are ways that they can take advantage and it appears that that is exactly what Bielema has planned.
Illinois is 2-2 overall and 0-1 in Big Ten play and is trying to stabilize a season that began with expectations of building on recent success. The offense has shown it can move the ball and score, putting even more urgency on a defense that has not played to the level expected of its personnel.
The change shocked many, and now all eyes are on Illinois.
Saturday will provide the first look at Illinois’ answer.
Until then, Bielema appears content to keep the details inside the Smith Center.
That means Illinois fans will have to wait to learn who is calling the defense.
So will Purdue.
