Illinois' head coach made his choice for the man who will lead the Fighting Illini into the 2026 season.
The Illinois Fighting Illini are scheduled to take on the UAB Blazers on September 3, 2026 before a tougher game on the schedule against Duke the following week.
How the Illini start the season could depend largely on how a bevy of transfers, 19 to be exact, acclimates themselves to life on and off the football field in Champaign, Ill.
Arguably the most important transfer on the team is Katin Houser, a quarterback with Big Ten experience dating back to his time in East Lansing, Michigan with the Michigan State Spartans.
Houser joined coach Bret Bielema at the Hilton in Chicago, Illinois on Tuesday during which coach Bielema made something most people already suspected official.

Houser was named the Illini's starting quarterback by Bielema less than two months ahead of the Illini's season opener.
The former Spartan and East Carolina Pirate will be charged with filling the shoes of departed run-threat pass Luke Altmyer who signed with the NFL's Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent.
Bielema intimated to media in Chicago on Tuesday that he wants Houser to have the prestige and responsibility of being Illinois' starter in year one with the team.
He knows from Altmyer's days on campus how much difference a steady hand at quarterback can make.
"In the last two years, we're 8-1 in one-score games in conference play and bowl games, and that was largely generated by a really good player that left us, Luke Altmyer," Bielema said.
"To bring Katin Houser here (to Media Days) as one of our player representatives, I wanted him to be known as the (starting) quarterback at the University of Illinois going into the season.
"I think he's a great representative of not just who he is, but what we represent at Illinois."
Following in Altmyer's Footsteps
The former Arkansas Razorbacks and Wisconsin Badgers head coach Bielema said Houser has big hopes, to follow in the footsteps of his departed former QB.
"I think that's why we got him," Bielema said at media days. "We've had a little bit of history, going back to Russell Wilson, my first-ever transfer quarterback, to Tommy DeVito, to Luke, and now, Katin hopes to follow in that same line."
Houser was listed as a four-star transfer from the Pirates this offseason after improving his stock with over 5,000 passing yards in two seasons in Greenville, North Carolina.
He doesn't have the winning pedigree at the Big Ten level that Altmyer did, but he has plenty of potential after his time with the Pirates.
As the Indiana Hoosiers showed last season while winning an improbable College Football Playoff title, experience and overcoming adversity matter a tremendous amount.
The Fighting Illini likely won't be anyone's pick to win a fourth straight national championship for the Big Ten, but if Hauser lights up the scoreboard like he did in Greenville, they have a real chance to go far this season.
