Illinois dipped into Florida again to land 2027 defensive back Tyrone Howard Jr., a long, ball‑skilled former receiver whose upside and versatility perfectly match Bret Bielema’s vision for the Illini secondary.
Illinois landed another high school recruit this week who may not have the high rankings fans want but his traits seem to be a clear indication of what this coaching staff is looking for.
Tyrone Howard Jr. is a 2027 defensive back from Neumann High School in Naples, Florida commited to Illinois on June 23 over offers from Wake Forest, South Florida, Florida Atlantic, and UConn. According to the 24/7 Sports Composite he's currently ranked No. 1405 nationally and the No. 142 safety in the nation.
Howard stands at 6-foot-2 and 165-pounds and was a two-way standout at both cornerback and wide receiver. The two-way background is a big part of the appeal for Illinois who continue to seek out versatility and flexibility in their recruits. Earlier in the week they nabbed WR Brody Knowles from Texas who along with being a wide receiver also played basketball at his high school.
At 165 pounds, the Illini staff will be trusted with getting Howard in a strict strength and conditioning program that could help him grow and handle the physicality he is going to find in the Big Ten. However, the traits he shows on film make him worth the investment.
He's got incredible ball skills and hands, attributed to his playing so much offense. He seems to be the prototype of what Illinois wants in their secondary. He's got length, movement skills, and ball production. His work on the offensive side will help him track the football, and be able to adjust his body to it.
The secondary at Illinois has quickly become reputable as one of the top units yearly in college football. The Illini have sent talents like Devon Witherspoon, Sydney Brown, Quan Martin, and Sydney Brown among others to the NFL in recent years and clearly Howard wants to be the next in line to hear his name on draft day.
Illinois continues to be aggressive in recruiting the football-obsessed states like Florida and Texas and it makes sense. There is an incredible amount of talent in those states that the ones who may not be ranked as high sometimes fall through the cracks and present an opportunity for schools like Illinois to take advantage of and bring to campus.
And continuing to get the commitments can make the next one easier. They can go into the living rooms of prospects that seem to be overlooked and show them the other players from the Sunshine State and sell that Champaign has almost become a home away from home.
