Illinois is going back to South Florida for its next lockdown corner. Three-star Miami Central defensive back Trezavant Boyd has committed to the Illini, adding speed, ball skills and versatility to a rapidly reloading secondary.
Illinois football continues to load up in talent for their future secondary.
The Illini landed the commitment of Class of 2027 Florida defensive back Trezavant Boyd this week, marking the third defensive backfield commitment in just over three weeks.
Boyd is a 5-foot-10, 160-pound cornerback that is currently ranked as a three-star by 24/7 Sports Composite. He is the No. 736 overall recruit in his class. His profile reflects legitimate Power Four traits and room for development. Boyd comes from the talent-rich Dade County in Miami, playing at Booker T. Washington and Mater Academy Charter before landing at Miami Central.
Given his size and skill set, Boyd projects as a prospect who will be able to play outside or in the slot as cornerback. Some staffs chose to recruit him as a potential nickel as well. The positional versatility seems to be something the Illini staff is prioritizing in all their recruits in the defensive backfield.
Head coach Bret Bielema identified Boyd dearly and remained persistent in his pursuit of the cornerback. Boyd's recruitment had picked up over the past year, receiving offers from Florida State, Auburn, and Georgia, among others. Georgia was one of the first national programs to offer Boyd after he impressed at a summer camp (sub required) in Athens.
Illinois defensive backs coach Corey Parker led the pursuit of Boyd and made him feel like a clear priority from the start. The relationship proved to be strong enough because Boyd certainly had a lot of attention closer to home.
Despite that level of attention, Illinois was able to fend off Georgia, UCF and Florida State in order to secure Boyd's recruitment. His commitment was the second from the state of Florida since former defensive coordinator left to take a role with Notre Dame. He is also the fourth defensive back in the class thus far as coach Bielema and new defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck continue the pursuit of talent to fit the new 3-3-5 scheme being implemented.
Landing him shows that Illinois is continuing to be a player in talent-rich states like Florida. The Illini's last three commitments are from Florida, Texas, and Michigan. Coach Bielema has been very vocal about wanting to keep in-state talent at home, but also recognizes that finding overlooked talent in the highly-recruited states is vital to upgrade the roster as well.
While the overall recruitment for this cycle may not be up to the standards of many Illini fans, thus far they are ranked at No. 56, the fact that Illinois is beating out other Power Four teams for the talent is a drastic change from years past.
Illinois is coming off the most successful two-year period in program history which has produced 19 wins. Coach Bielema has overhauled the defensive staff in hopes of his team continuing to produce on the field and not stay stagnant. Whether that gamble will ultimately payoff, is yet to be seen.
Illinois will kick off the 2026 season against UAB on September 3rd.
