Illinois went into Detroit and beat out Big Ten competition for three-star defensive back Darryl Flemister, a versatile playmaker whose commitment signals just how serious the Illini are about elevating their secondary for the future.
While America enjoyed watching the fireworks on Saturday, Illinois head coach Bret Bielema got to enjoy adding another piece to his future defense.
Three-star defensive back Darryl Flemister committed to Illinois, choosing the Illini over rival Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Michigan State and a long list of other power four suitors. Flemister, a class of 2027 prospect, is ranked in the top-20 prospects in the state of Michigan per 24/7 Sports.
The 6-foot, 160-pound defender is a multi-position standout at Martin Luther King in Detroit, Michigan. He played some quarterback in his sophomore season and then during his junior year focused on safety and cornerback.
Illinois' relationship with Flemister began with the cornerback was entering his sophomore season and he decided to camp at Champaign. It was after that visit that he told his father (sub required) he was sure Illinois would be one of his top options.
Then defensive line coach Terrance Jamison officially extended an offer in April, and shortly thereafter defensive backs coach Corey Parker took over. Parker is a well known presence in the Detroit area and has been a huge reason that Illinois has developed a pipeline in the state of Michigan. It was a relationship that ultimately concluded with Flemister and his family feeling comfortable enough and picking Illinois despite a long list of other potential Big Ten teams checking in.
Official visits (sub required) to Illinois and Iowa set up a head-to-head battle between the two rival schools. The Illini staff emphasized their track record in developing defensive backs since Bret Bielema took over and then on July 4, Flemister decided to post his commitment to Illinois on his social media.
Flemister's commitment continues the trend of Illinois recruiting flexible and versatile defensive backs for the future of the 3-3-5 defense brought in by new defensive coordinator Bobby Hauck. Andrew Ivins of 24/7 said that Flemister "Sees it at an advanced level with his active eyes and route awareness."
If developed as projected, Flemister can be viewed as a multi-year contributor for the Illini though undoubtedly he will need time in the weight room to get up to a proper weight to deal with the physicality that he will see in the Big Ten. What he will bring on day one however, is a competitive fire and work ethic which his high school coach said was one of his best traits.
Illinois is coming off of a 9-win season and undergoing big changes on the defensive side. They let defensive coordinator Aaron Henry go on to Notre Dame and take their defensive backs coach job. And to replace him they brought in Hauck who they hope will be able to bring in a style of defense that could keep opposing offenses on their toes.
The Illini currently have 15 commitments and are ranked No. 60 overall in the country in recruiting for 2027.
