Illinois' Bret Bielema Describes "Personal" Motivation for Beating Oregon

Illinois coach Bret Bielema described the motivation for leading his team to a huge win over Oregon.

The Illinois Fighting Illini scored one of the most satisfying wins of the Bret Bielema era in Week 8 college football action, winning 21-10 after trailing by three points at halftime.

The Illini came out firing with seven points in the third quarter and seven in the fourth quarter to secure the victory, relying on the timely passing of Michael Clayton II and clutch defense from Roger Cooper's unit as the game headed toward its final stages.

Bielema revealed what he said to his team after the game, and how he made beating the Ducks "personal" in surprising comments.

"This is Personal to Me"

Bielema detailed his mindset in addressing his team during a game that looked like it might be another "close but no cigar" situation in Champaign, Ill.

The Fighting Illini turned the tide and secured its fourth win of the season in seven tries over a Big Ten powerhouse without some of its best offensive players.

"I showed them the score of halftime the last time we were at Oregon," Bielema said to Glenn Kinley of WCIA-3, which was 35-3 at the time.

"For me, as a head coach, this is personal to me. I walked into that locker room at halftime and had a really big moment career wise. Like 'This isn't what we're doing here. I don't want to play games, I want to win games."

Illinois' season hasn't turned out the way fans expected after tough losses to Purdue and Duke earlier in the season, but the Fighting Illini have battled key injuries of their own throughout the season, and have started to learn how to overcome them with Bielema and his staff watching and teaching the entire time.

Run Game Shocks Ducks in Champaign

Illinois' running game came to life against the Ducks, led by Aidan Laughery and Jordan Anderson, who combined for 190 yards on 24 carries.

Javari Barnett and Carson Boyd also chipped in with nearly 50 yards between them as Illinois outrushed Oregon, 225 yards to 180 yards.

Laughery's 75-yard touchdown at the 2:15 mark of the second quarter gave the Fighting Illini new life, which helped give Clayton II the confidence to toss two second-half touchdown passes with the game hanging in the balance.

Bielema's team almost certainly won't make the College Football Playoff this season, but beating the Ducks was a nice consolation prize that will carry weight in the program for years to come. This win will stand the test of time as more proof that Bielema's program can go toe-to-toe with the big money programs of college football, and beat them at their own game, coming off of two consecutive bowl wins of even greater magnitude.

The Fighting Illini aren't done yet, and things are looking up heading into Week 9's game against Maryland. It's a new era of college football, and anyone can beat anyone on any given Saturday — something Oregon knows all too well after Saturday's defeat at the hands of Bielema's team.
