This week Illinois offered AJ Williams, the consensus No. 1 player in the country.
Illinois' latest offer shows just how far the program's ambition has come.
Earlier this week A.J. Williams shared on social media that he had received an offer from the Illini. Williams is the consensus No. 1 overall prospect in the 2028 recruiting cycle and a player many of the top programs are going after.
Williams is the type of player that a program can build their entire foundation on. He still has time to decide where he wants to play so building a relationship with him early makes sense.
Williams already has the physical tools to play college basketball today. He is a 6-foot-8 wing, already at 210 pounds. He is ranked No. 1 by 24/7 Sports, ESPN, and Rivals showing that even in a talented recruiting cycle, he seems to be on a tier of his own. He has also played on the Nike EYBL circuit for Team CP3, showing he can hold his own even against older, elite talent.
Williams brings the look of a modern wing with size, length and his scoring versatility. Because he is so young it is reasonable that he could be even more impressive physically by the time he is ready to step foot on a collegiate basketball court.
On the same day that Illinois offered Williams, so did the UConn Huskies. The Illini have had frequent battles with the Huskies over the last few seasons but this one will occur off the hardwood. Along with UConn, there will be stiff competition for Williams. He has reportedly already taken unofficial visits to Duke, Georgia, and Auburn.
Illinois is not being shy or tentative regarding the 2028 class. They are also considered the leaders for two of the state's top stars in Brady Pettigrew and Cole Kelly. Head coach Brad Underwood seems to have done a great job revitalizing the support of the fanbase and more importantly, the donors in getting the resources to go out and get the best talent available.
The sell seems to be evident. Illinois was able to make the Elite Eight three seasons ago and just last year made it to the Final Four. The success on the court is one thing but it is also taking its' most talented players and getting them ready for the next level. In recent years Illinois has seen Ayo Dosunmu, Terrence Shannon Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, Will Riley and now Keaton Wagler all get drafted to the NBA. The program's ability to sell both on the court success and personal development is going to be the pitch they can use to differentiate themselves from other programs.
Even with this recruitment probably being years away from a resolution, the fact that Illinois has made this offer can do wonders for the program's perception and brand value. If they are able to nab Williams, it can really open the door for this program to be able to enter a new level of recruiting that it has not experienced in its' programs history.
The Illini are expected to be a top-5 team in the preseason going into next year and if they are to win some of these big-time recruitments, they'll have to show they can live up to the lofty expectations.
