Houser has taken big steps forward leading up to a colossal game at Ohio State.
The Illinois football program is gunning for its third consecutive winning season and fourth winning season in its last five seasons, bringing a 2-1 record to the Horseshoe in Columbus on Saturday against Ryan Day's Buckeyes.
The Buckeyes are coming off of a blowout against Kent State and boast one of the best passing attacks in the country led by Heisman candidate Julian Sayin, who has struggled at times in big games throughout his young Buckeyes career.
Sayin could meet his match in Fighting Illini quarterback Katin Houser, who has looked like one of the Big Ten's best despite his team's tough loss to Duke in Week 2.
Houser's development was praised by QB coach Mike Neu ahead of Week 4's road test.

Houser's ability to go through multiple progressions and read the defense were cited as areas where he has impressed so far according to Neu, whose comments were shared by Scott Richey of The News-Gazette in Champaign-Urbana.
"I think he's just making improvements every week, I thought last week he really did a nice job of staying on schedule in the passing game," Neu said about Houser's 305-yard, two touchdown and one interception performance in his team's win over Southern Illinois.
"He's just getting better every week, he's gaining more trust and confidence in the guys that are around him."
Neu added that Houser does a great job of getting different players involved in the passing game, and turning over a new leaf each week as he prepares his teammates for practicing and competing the right way. Houser's leadership skills have been tested on the field lately, and he's come through with flying colors more often than not.
Bouncing Back From Adversity
Houser had a rough second-half interception against Duke that led to a narrow 31-27 loss. Neu has been pleased with his ability to bounce back from mistakes.
"Yeah, certainly he's a competitor and just continuing as a friendly reminder throughout the course of the game...Obviously it's disappointing, but nothing you can do to change that (interceptions), you just keep attacking the next play mentality, and he does that, he's quick to obviously learn from a mistake that happens throughout the game."
Neu added that Houser is starting to build a rapport with other players outside of star receiver Collin Dixon, who has exploded onto the national scene with 367 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in the absence of star transfer Jayshon Platt.
The Fighting Illini will need a career-best type of performance from Houser this weekend with Jeremiah Smith, Chris Henry Jr., Bo Jackson, Sayin and the rest of the Buckeyes' offense stars preparing to defend their home turf.
Houser has the look of a future pro quarterback, now he will be tasked with uplifting his teammates as he gets ready for a Buckeyes team that is easily the best he's seen this season.
