Illinois is chasing one of the nation’s toughest young guards in 2027 standout NaVorro Bowman Jr., a rugged two-way playmaker whose game and mentality could anchor the Illini backcourt of the future.
It appears Illinois is firmly in the race for one of the top prospects in the 2027 recruiting cycle.
NaVorro Bowman Jr. is a top-20 prospect out of California who may have the type of skillset that that would fit neatly in the emerging identity of head coach Brad Underwood's Fighting Illini program.
Bowman Jr. is a 6-foot-3, 180-pound guard from Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California. If the name sounds familiar, well it should, his father was one of the best football players in the NFL.
Bowman Jr. already has the build of someone who can play at the college level today and it is his versatility that many coaches are attracted to. He can play both point or combo guard. What separates him from others however is his love of playing defense. Evaluators have described him as one of the best defensive players in the class and a genuine two-way player.
Bowman averaged 20.8 points and 3.7 assists on the EYBL circuit where he also shot 44.3 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from three. For Notre Dame, he averaged 22.5 points, 5 assists, and 4.9 rebounds showing he could handle a heavy work load but also be a presence on the glass even from the back court.
Bowman's recruitment looks to be one that will be quite competitive. He holds offers from Kentucky, Texas, Kansas, UCLA, USC, and plenty others. He has currently set to visit the University of Texas and Stanford. According to what he told 24/7 Sports, he and Illinois have connected on a Zoom call already and the Illini will battle other blue blood programs to convince Bowman Jr. to come visit Champaign as well.
Illinois' recent success has been built around on talented guards and Bowman could be sold that he could be the next leader of the back court. His ability to get into the paint, play off of ball screens and hit perimeter shots could give the Illini another creator who can keep the floor spaced. If the Illini continue to build rosters the way they have recently, Bowman Jr. could be surrounded by shooters and athletic wings which would give him opportunities to leverage his quick first-step.
It is hard to discuss Bowman Jr. and not bring up his father. Navorro Bowman made his name playing in the Big Ten Conference for the Penn State Nittany Lions. An opportunity for Illinois to pitch is that they can offer Bowman Jr. the same sort of stage that his father played at in the Big Ten Conference, but yet the ability to build and create his own story and the University of Illinois.
Illinois continues to be quite aggressive in their pursuit of the 2027 cycle. They have already secured the commitments of forwards Mason Martin (from Neuqua Valley) and Quinton Kitt (East Peoria) and both of those early evaluations seem to have paid off as both have recently become upgraded to four-stars in the class. But Bowman Jr. is the type of prospect that would be the headliner. Recruiting him will not be easy but that does not seem to deter Brad Underwood and is a compliment to the stature of what he has built this Illini program into.
