In a newly expanded Big Ten where stars are made in front of microphones as much as under the lights, Illinois is betting its image on two hard‑hitting defensive backs and a transfer quarterback with something to prove.
Now that the Big Ten Conference has expanded to eighteen universities, events like Big Ten Media Days have become almost just as much about branding as it is about discussing the upcoming season.
The Fighting Illini are coming off an unprecedented two year success as a football program having won 19 games which is a record for back-to-back seasons. A lot of their marquee players from those teams have gone on either to the NFL or to graduation and so this season will be one that will have a lot more unknowns than years past.
There will be a new voice on the defensive side as former defensive coordinator Aaron Henry has moved on to Notre Dame to become their defensive backs coach and Bobby Hauck has been brought in to install a completely brand new defense as his replacement.
Head coach Bret Bielema has always taken the event seriously when it comes to who he brings along with him knowing the event essentially kickstarts excitement for the fans and the football team.
Matthew Bailey: Bailey has led the Illini in tackles the past two seasons and is already a two-time All-Big Ten performer. His inclusion seems almost automatic when you understand the role he has had on the defense in years' past. With a brand new defense being installed this season, no one can speak about the evolution better and arguably no one's words can be more trusted than those of Bailey's.
Juice Clarke: Clarke comes into 2026 after a breakout season in 2025 where he was an All-Big Ten Honorable mention despite having missed the first four games of the season. For his career, he has played in 33 games, started 10 of them. He has gotten 69 tackles 2 fumble recoveries and 12 pass breakups recorded.
Getting an invite to represent the program is a huge honor and Clarke being chosen shows the level of trust and confidence the coaching staff has in him.
Katin Houser: For the casual fan, new quarterback Katin Houser's inclusion in the final three may come off as a surprise. House was the top target in the transfer portal for Bret Bielema and offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr. and were able to secure his commitment from East Carolina. Last season Houser was named to the Manning Award List throwing for over 3,300 yards and 19 touchdowns with just 6 interceptions.
Him being selected as a representative suggests he has shown the leadership that the position requires as the team is transitioning away from program great and multiple-year starter Luke Altmyer.
Bringing two defensive backs and a quarterback possibly provides confirmation on what many consider to be the strongest parts of the team. The Illini offense continues to be one of the better units in the Big Ten the last few years and if Houser can continue that trajectory it would mean Illinois has a strong chance for another double-digit win season.
The Big Ten Media Days will be taking place in Chicago this summer from July 28-30. Bret Bielema and the Fighting Illini will once again kick off the festivities on Day 1.
